Chapter 8 - The First Lie.
The blood in the warehouse belonged to Claire.
The amount was small enough that Detective Voss believed she was probably still alive.
That was the only good news.
Wade Mercer disappeared before police arrived.
His phone was found crushed beneath a highway overpass.
His financial records showed a payment of fifty thousand dollars from a shell company connected to Eleanor's family trust.
Ethan stared at the bank statement.
"She arranged this before she was arrested."
Voss nodded.
"The transfer was initiated three days ago."
That meant Eleanor had known something was changing.
Lily thought of the removed baseboard and the memory card placed where her receipts had been hidden.
"She wanted us to find some of this."
Ethan looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because she wants to control the story even after she's gone."
Voss agreed.
"The card may be evidence, but it may also be bait."
Investigators reviewed every video on the card frame by frame.
Most showed Eleanor secretly filming Lily during moments of exhaustion.
Lily crying in the laundry room.
Lily falling asleep at the kitchen table.
Lily raising her voice after Eleanor refused to return Noah.
Taken alone, the clips could make Lily look unstable.
Taken with full context, they showed deliberate provocation.
One video was different.
It showed Eleanor seated alone at her desk speaking directly to the camera.
"If Ethan is watching this, then Lily has turned him against me."
Her voice was calm.
"You will believe I hurt your son."
She leaned closer.
"Before you decide who the monster is, ask what your father did to Claire."
The video ended.
Ethan looked at Voss.
"She is blaming my father."
"Maybe because he's dead and can't answer."
But Robert had left letters.
Voss obtained permission to examine the metal case from the storage unit.
At the bottom was a sealed envelope marked FOR CLAIRE ONLY.
Claire had never received it.
Inside, Robert described the night he removed Claire from the house.
He wrote that a doctor had warned him Eleanor might be inducing symptoms to keep Claire dependent.
He wrote that Eleanor became violent when confronted.
He wrote that he feared she would kill Claire before allowing anyone to take her away.
Then came the part Ethan was not prepared for.
Robert admitted that he had helped create the fake death story.
He had agreed to let Ethan believe Claire died.
His reason was written in one terrible sentence.
I chose one child to save because I was too afraid to save both.
Ethan stood up so fast the chair tipped backward.
"He left me with her."
Lily reached for him.
He stepped away.
"He knew what she was and left me with her."
The anger in his voice frightened Noah awake.
Ethan immediately softened and took the child.
He kissed Noah's hair with tears in his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
Voss's phone rang.
She listened, then looked toward the door.
"We found Mercer."
Ethan froze.
"Where?"
"At a motel twenty miles from Bellhaven."
"And Claire?"
Voss's expression tightened.
"Mercer was alone."
"Is he talking?"
"He says Eleanor never hired him to kidnap Claire."
Lily felt a chill.
"Then why did he have her bracelet?"
