Chapter 2 - The Smile Behind Her.

Two police officers entered the kitchen before Eleanor could reach the hallway.

Officer Ruiz came first, broad-shouldered and controlled, with one hand raised in warning.

Officer Bennett followed with a clipboard tucked beneath his arm.

Eleanor stared at their uniforms as if they were costumes in a badly staged play.

"There has been a misunderstanding."

Ruiz stepped between Eleanor and the front door.

"Ma'am, keep your hands where I can see them."

Lily instinctively backed toward the sink.

Ethan moved beside her and gently lifted Noah from her arms.

The simple act almost broke her.

For weeks, she had been afraid to ask Ethan for help because Eleanor had convinced her that he was tired of her weakness.

Now Ethan held their son against his shoulder and whispered, "I've got him."

Eleanor's voice sharpened.

"Ethan, tell these men to leave."

"No."

That one word changed the room.

Officer Bennett opened his clipboard.

"Eleanor Carter, we need to speak with you regarding allegations of unlawful restraint, interference with communications, and assault."

Eleanor laughed once.

It was a small, elegant sound filled with contempt.

"Assault?"

She turned to Lily.

"Did you tell them I assaulted you?"

Lily touched the inside of her wrist.

Beneath the bracelet Eleanor had insisted she wear was a fading purple mark shaped like fingers.

Ruiz noticed.

"Ma'am, turn around."

Eleanor's mouth opened.

"You cannot be serious."

Ruiz repeated the order.

"Turn around."

The cuffs clicked shut behind Eleanor's back.

Her entire face changed.

The confidence vanished first.

Then the smile.

Then the careful maternal softness she had used around Ethan for years.

What remained was naked rage.

"You ungrateful little liar."

She lunged half a step toward Lily before Ruiz stopped her.

Noah stirred in Ethan's arms.

Lily flinched.

Ethan saw both things.

"Don't speak to her."

Eleanor stared at him.

"You think this is about dishes?"

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Officer Bennett looked up from his notes.

"Mrs. Carter, you should stop talking."

Eleanor ignored him.

"Ask your wife why she was going through my study last night."

Lily froze.

She had not gone into Eleanor's study.

She had not even known Eleanor had noticed the door open.

Ethan turned toward Lily.

"Were you in there?"

"No."

Eleanor smiled again, but this time it looked desperate.

"Of course she says no."

Ruiz guided her toward the hallway.

As she passed the kitchen island, Eleanor twisted enough to look directly at Lily.

"Check the nursery before you celebrate."

Lily's stomach dropped.

"What did you do?"

Eleanor only laughed.

The officers took her outside.

For several seconds, no one moved.

Then Lily ran.

Ethan followed her upstairs with Noah.

The nursery door stood open.

The curtains moved gently in the air-conditioned draft.

The crib was untouched.

The rocking chair was empty.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then Lily saw the baseboard.

The narrow strip of wood near the closet had been pulled away.

Her hidden grocery receipts were gone.

In their place was a small black memory card.

Ethan crouched beside it.

"Is this yours?"

Lily shook her head.

He picked it up carefully.

May you like

On the back, written in silver ink, were three words.

FOR ETHAN ONLY.
