Chapter 1 - The Cry for Help

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the quiet suburban street.
Peter sat on his front porch steps.
He was enjoying a rare moment of peace.
A battered black toolbox sat open beside him.
He picked up a screwdriver to tighten a loose hinge.
The air was still, heavy with the scent of freshly cut grass.
Then, a small, breathless voice shattered the silence.
"Uncle Peter!"
Peter looked up, his brow furrowing in confusion.
He dropped the screwdriver, the metal clattering against the wooden steps.
At the end of the walkway stood his eight-year-old nephew, Drew.
The boy was struggling, his face flushed and streaked with dirt and tears.
Clinging tightly to Drew's back was his six-year-old sister, Lily.
Lily looked pale, her blonde hair messy and her eyes wide with exhaustion.
Drew limped forward, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
Peter stood up instantly, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"Drew!"
Peter rushed down the steps, his eyes scanning the children.
"God, what happened?"
He reached the kids just as Drew’s legs buckled.
Peter caught them, noticing the deep, bloody scrape on Drew's right knee.
The boy's ragged t-shirt was stained with sweat and grime.
Drew looked up, his hazel eyes swimming with unshed tears.
His voice trembled as he spoke.
"She locked us downstairs again."
The words hit Peter like a physical blow.
The image of his sister doing this made his blood run cold.
Lily whimpered softly, burying her face into Peter's flannel shirt.
"Lily was hungry," Drew added, his voice breaking.
Peter dropped to his knees right there on the concrete path.
He pulled both children into a tight, desperate embrace.
He wrapped his strong arms around their small, trembling bodies.
"I've got you," Peter whispered fiercely.
"You are safe now."
He held them close, feeling the rapid beat of their tiny hearts.
Drew finally let out a loud sob, burying his face in Peter's shoulder.
Peter rested his cheek against Drew's messy hair.
He closed his eyes, letting out a slow, shaky breath.
When he opened his eyes again, the softness was gone.
His jaw clenched tight.
A dark, simmering anger flared in his eyes.

He stared down the empty street toward their house.
He knew exactly what he had to do next.

He was never letting them go back there.
This ended today.
