Chapter 10 - The Family We Choose

The doorbell rang at exactly six o'clock.

Drew did not flinch this time.

Instead, he dropped his markers on the rug and ran down the hallway.

Peter followed close behind, wiping his wet hands on a plaid dish towel.

Drew reached up, turned the latch, and pulled the heavy door open himself.

Mark stood on the porch holding three large, flat cardboard boxes.

The rich, savory smell of pepperoni and melted cheese instantly filled the entryway.

"Pizza delivery for the bravest kids in town," Mark announced with a wide grin.

Lily trotted into the hallway, her pink unicorn tucked securely under her arm.

"I smell extra cheese!" she declared happily.

They all gathered around the large, circular kitchen table.

It was a stark, beautiful contrast to the cold, dark basement of their past.

The kitchen was bright, warm, and filled with the sound of genuine laughter.

As they ate, Mark told them a funny story about his clumsy golden retriever chasing a squirrel.

Lily giggled uncontrollably, a long string of mozzarella stretching from her slice.

Drew laughed too, a real, unburdened sound that made Peter's chest ache with profound relief.

When the last piece of pizza was gone, Drew slid out of his wooden chair.

He jogged into the living room and quickly returned with a piece of folded green construction paper.

He walked over and handed it directly to the lawyer.

"This is for you," Drew said, his hazel eyes meeting Mark's gaze.

Mark wiped his hands on a paper napkin and took the card gently.

He opened it to reveal a colorful drawing of four stick figures standing in front of a brown house.

One figure held a black briefcase, one held a silver toolbox, and two were very small.

Above the figures, written in slightly uneven red letters, it read: "Thank you for saving us."

Mark swallowed hard, his dark eyes shimmering with sudden moisture.

"This is the best payment I have ever received in my entire career," Mark said softly.

"Thank you, Drew. I am going to frame this in my office."

Drew smiled brightly and climbed back into his seat.

Peter leaned back in his chair, quietly watching the scene unfold.

He looked at Mark, at Lily brushing sauce off her unicorn, and at Drew sitting tall and proud.

They were not a traditional family by any conventional definition.

They were a makeshift crew forged in crisis and bound by choice.

But as Peter looked around his bright, noisy kitchen, he knew one absolute truth.

He would have fought the whole world to get them here.

The long, terrifying nightmare was finally over.

Their real life had just begun.
