Chapter 6 - A Moment to Breathe

The deafening quiet that followed the roar of Sarah’s car engine felt surreal.

Peter stood in the entryway, taking three long, deep breaths to settle his racing heart.

He walked down the dim hallway toward the bathroom door.

He knocked lightly with his knuckle so he wouldn't startle the kids.

"Drew, Lily, it's Uncle Peter," he said softly.

"She's gone. You can open the door now."

The brass lock clicked from the inside, and the door swung open slowly.

Drew stood in the doorway, his body rigid and his knuckles white from gripping his sister's hand.

Lily peered out from behind his shoulder, her eyes wide with lingering fear.

"Did she take us back?" Lily asked in a small, trembling voice.

Peter immediately dropped to one knee, looking both of them directly in the eyes.

"No, sweetie. Nobody is taking you anywhere," Peter promised, his voice steady and full of conviction.

"A judge looked at everything that happened, and he decided that you stay with me."

"You are safe here. Forever if you want."

Drew let out a long, heavy breath, his small shoulders visibly dropping three inches.

The intense, watchful guard he had maintained for years seemed to crumble in an instant.

Lily ran forward and wrapped her tiny arms around Peter’s neck.

Peter hugged her tight, lifting her effortlessly as he stood back up.

He reached out his other hand and gently ruffled Drew’s messy brown hair.

"How about we spend the afternoon doing whatever you guys want?" Peter offered.

"No chores, no scary stuff. Just fun."

Drew looked up, a faint flicker of disbelief still in his eyes.

"Can... can we just watch cartoons on the big TV?" Drew asked quietly.

"And maybe have some ice cream?" Lily added timidly.

Peter smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes.

"That sounds like the best plan I've heard all week," Peter said.

He led them into the cozy living room and turned on the television.

He brought out two large bowls of vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate syrup.

Drew sat on the soft plush sofa, holding his bowl carefully in his lap.

He ate slowly, taking in the warm, bright room, the peaceful silence, and the gentle breeze blowing through the open window.

For the first time in as long as he could remember, Drew didn't have to watch the door.

He didn't have to protect his little sister from a sudden outburst.

He was just an eight-year-old boy watching cartoons and eating ice cream.

Peter sat in the armchair across from them, quietly watching the two children relax.

They still had a long journey of healing ahead of them.

There would be legal battles, social worker visits, and emotional scars to mend.

But looking at Drew's calm face, Peter knew the hardest step was already behind them.

They were finally home.
