Chapter 8 - The First Safe Night

The evening passed in a quiet, comforting blur of activities.

Peter helped the children unpack their brand new clothes.

They carefully placed the small t-shirts and jeans into the empty dresser drawers.

Lily placed her pink unicorn right in the center of her soft pillow.

Drew stacked his new building blocks neatly in the corner of the room.

For the first time, they had a space that truly belonged to them.

As the clock on the hallway wall struck eight, Peter announced it was bedtime.

"Alright, you two, time to brush those teeth," Peter said cheerfully.

He handed them the new, brightly colored toothbrushes Mark had bought.

They stood side by side on a small wooden step stool in the bathroom.

Peter watched them brush, his heart swelling with a fierce, protective love.

After they washed their faces, they climbed into the large guest bed.

The fresh cotton sheets smelled like lavender and clean laundry.

Peter pulled the heavy blue quilt up to their chins.

He reached over and clicked on the small, warm reading lamp.

"Do you want me to leave the door open a little bit?" Peter asked softly.

Lily nodded her head vigorously against the fluffy white pillow.

"Yes, please," she whispered, clutching her unicorn tight.

Drew stared up at the ceiling, his small brow furrowed in deep thought.

"Uncle Peter?" Drew asked, his voice hesitant and quiet.

"I am right here, buddy," Peter answered, sitting gently on the edge of the mattress.

"What happens when the judge changes his mind?" Drew asked, looking at Peter with scared eyes.

The question broke Peter's heart all over again.

He realized that Drew was still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Peter leaned in closer, making sure he had the boy's full attention.

"Judges do not just change their minds about things like this, Drew," Peter explained calmly.

"Mark is an excellent lawyer, and he made sure all the paperwork is permanent."

"He submitted all the evidence, including the doctor's reports from this morning."

"The law is absolutely on our side now."

"Your mother cannot just walk in and demand to take you away ever again."

Drew processed this information slowly, his hazel eyes searching Peter's face for any sign of a lie.

"So we really get to stay here for good?" Drew asked softly.

"You get to stay here for as long as you want to," Peter promised him.

"This is your home now, and I am not going anywhere."

Drew let out a long, shuddering breath, and a single tear escaped his right eye.

He quickly wiped it away with the back of his small hand.

Peter reached out and gently rested his large, warm hand on Drew's shoulder.

"It is okay to cry, Drew," Peter told him gently.

"You do not have to be the tough guy anymore."

"You can just be an eight-year-old boy."

At those words, the invisible wall Drew had built around his heart finally crumbled.

He rolled over and hugged Peter's arm tightly, crying quietly into the sleeve of the flannel shirt.

Peter just sat there in the dim light, rubbing the boy's back in slow, soothing circles.

He let Drew cry out all the fear, anger, and sadness of the past few years.

Eventually, the heavy tears stopped, and the boy's breathing grew steady and rhythmic.

Drew had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep.

Peter carefully untangled his arm and stood up from the bed.

He walked to the doorway, leaving it cracked open just the way Lily liked it.

He stood in the quiet hallway for a long moment, listening to them rest securely.

Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but tonight, they had won.
