Chapter 7 - The Helpers

The late afternoon sun began to dip below the horizon.

Peter, Drew, and Lily were still relaxing in the cozy living room.

The television played a colorful cartoon softly in the background.

Suddenly, a firm but gentle knock sounded at the front door.

Drew flinched instantly, his body tensing as his eyes darted toward the hallway.

Lily dropped her plastic toy and quickly grabbed her brother's arm.

"It is okay, guys," Peter said immediately, holding up a reassuring hand.

"That is just my best friend, Mark."

"He is the lawyer who helped keep you safe with the judge today."

Peter walked to the door, deliberately looking through the peephole before touching the lock.

He wanted the children to see that he was being careful.

He opened the heavy wooden door wide to let his friend inside.

Mark stood on the porch holding three large, brown shopping bags.

He was a tall, kind-looking man with warm brown eyes and a gentle smile.

"Hey, Pete," Mark said quietly, stepping into the bright entryway.

"I brought some things I thought you three might need for the weekend."

Peter closed the door and loudly slid the heavy deadbolt into place.

"Thank you, Mark, I really appreciate this," Peter replied, taking two of the heavy bags.

They walked together into the living room where the children were waiting.

Drew and Lily watched the newcomer with cautious, wide eyes.

Mark knelt down slowly, keeping his distance so he would not overwhelm them.

"Hi, Drew. Hi, Lily," Mark said in a soft, very calm voice.

"My name is Mark, and I am a very good friend of your Uncle Peter."

"He told me you guys needed to stay here for a while, and I wanted to help."

Drew nodded slightly but did not speak, moving a fraction of an inch closer to his sister.

"I brought you some brand new clothes, some toothbrushes, and a few toys," Mark continued.

"I wanted to make sure you had everything you need for your new bedroom."

Mark gently placed the brown bags on the soft living room rug and stepped back.

He stood up, giving the children plenty of space to investigate on their own terms.

Peter reached into the first bag and pulled out a stack of folded t-shirts, pajamas, and jeans.

He also pulled out a fluffy pink unicorn and a large set of colorful building blocks.

Lily gasped out loud, her eyes locking onto the bright pink stuffed animal.

"Is that really for me?" Lily whispered, stepping forward hesitantly.

"It sure is, sweetie," Peter smiled, handing the soft toy directly to her.

She hugged the unicorn tightly to her chest, burying her small face in the soft fur.

Drew looked at the heavy box of building blocks and then up at Mark.

"Thank you, sir," Drew said politely, his voice still guarded but sincere.

"You are very welcome, Drew," Mark replied warmly.

Mark turned to Peter and gave a brief, subtle nod.

It was a silent, powerful confirmation that the legal paperwork was completely ironclad.

Sarah could not touch them.

The children were finally surrounded by adults who actually wanted to protect them.

For the first time in their young lives, the world was not a scary, unpredictable place.
