Chapter 12 - The Signature Page.

Daniel stared at Claire as if she had spoken in another language.

"That's impossible."

Claire remained calm.

"Hale claims you handed him the original page last Thursday at his office."

"I haven't seen Hale in three weeks."

Charles watched his son closely.

Daniel looked genuinely shocked.

But shock was no longer proof of innocence.

"Does Hale have evidence?"

Charles asked.

Claire nodded.

"He says his office has lobby footage."

Daniel stood abruptly.

"Then get it."

"We will."

Claire held up a hand.

"But there is more."

She showed them an image Hale had provided.

It was a photograph of the trust signature page lying on a conference table.

Beside it sat a man's hand wearing a distinctive silver signet ring.

Daniel looked at his own hand.

He wore no ring.

Charles did.

The room became quiet.

Daniel looked at his father.

"Dad?"

Charles raised his right hand.

His Mercer signet ring caught the light.

It looked almost identical to the one in the photo.

Claire zoomed in.

"Charles, where were you last Thursday?"

"At St. Matthew's Hospital board meeting from nine until noon."

"After that?"

"Lunch with Dr. Warren, then home."

Daniel stared at the photograph.

"Someone wants it to look like Dad delivered the page."

Charles thought of Vanessa watching him enter the safe code.

Then he remembered something else.

Three months earlier, Daniel had given Vanessa a custom signet ring for their anniversary.

It used the Mercer crest because she had said she wanted to feel part of the family.

Charles looked toward the foyer.

"Vanessa has a Mercer ring."

Daniel's face changed.

"She does."

Claire enlarged the image again.

The hand in the photograph was slimmer than Charles's.

A dark polished fingernail was visible at the edge of the frame.

Daniel whispered.

"It's hers."

Charles felt no victory.

Only exhaustion.

Claire made another call.

Within an hour, Hale's office footage confirmed Vanessa had entered the building wearing a tan overcoat and sunglasses.

She had signed in under a shortened version of her maiden name.

The mystery of the signature page was over.

The consequences were not.

By morning, a child welfare specialist arrived to speak privately with Eli, Daniel, Charles, and Nora.

Charles did not coach Eli or sit in the room.

He waited in the kitchen with coffee he never drank.

Daniel sat across from him.

Neither man spoke for nearly forty minutes.

When the specialist finished, she explained that Eli would remain temporarily with Charles while a formal safety plan was completed.

Daniel agreed without argument.

His cooperation did not erase what happened, but Charles noticed it.

The specialist also told Daniel he would need to participate in counseling and parenting work before any expanded contact was considered.

Daniel nodded.

"I'll do it."

That afternoon, Charles took Eli to his own smaller house across town.

The boy stared out the car window at the mansion as they drove away.

"Are we coming back?"

Charles looked at him in the rearview mirror.

"Someday, if you want to."

Eli was quiet.

"Will Dad be there?"

"I don't know yet."

"Will Vanessa?"

Charles answered carefully.

"No."

Eli leaned back against the seat.

For the first time since the previous night, his shoulders seemed to relax.

Then he reached into the pocket of the coat Nora had found for him.

"Grandpa, I forgot to show you this."

He handed Charles a folded piece of paper.

It was a drawing made with blue and black crayons.

Three people stood in front of the mansion.

Eli was in the middle.

Charles was on one side.

Daniel was on the other.

Vanessa was not in the picture.

At the bottom, in uneven letters, Eli had written one sentence.

DAD CAN COME BACK IF HE OPENS THE DOOR.

Charles stared at the words at the next red light.

The child had reduced the entire family's failure to one simple act.

May you like

Open the door.

Daniel's future with his son would depend on whether he finally understood what that meant.
