Chapter 5 - The Gatehouse Recording.

The mansion's backup lights cast the hallway in a dim amber glow.
Charles immediately locked the guest suite from the inside and asked Nora to stay with Eli.
Daniel followed him into the corridor.
"Vanessa."
Charles did not answer.
They found her in the library beside the window, holding her phone.
"What happened to the power?"
Charles watched her carefully.
"You tell me."
Vanessa gave him an irritated look.
"I was making a call."
"To whom?"
"My attorney."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Why do you need an attorney?"
She looked at him with open contempt.
"Because your father is treating me like a criminal in my own home."
Charles ignored the accusation.
"Where is Nora's key?"
Vanessa's expression did not change.
"What key?"
Charles let the silence stretch.
Then the power returned.
Somewhere in the foyer, the security system beeped as it rebooted.
Nora came down the hallway a few minutes later.
"I found something."
She held up the silver key.
"It was on the carpet outside the guest room."
Charles looked at her.
She met his eyes for half a second.
He understood immediately.
Nora had lied in the hallway to see who reacted.
The real gatehouse key had never left her apron.
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"This is ridiculous."
Charles turned toward Daniel.
"Stay with Eli."
Then he and Nora crossed the snowy courtyard toward the old gatehouse.
The small brick building smelled of dust and cold metal.
Nora unlocked a cabinet behind the electrical panel.
Inside sat an old digital recorder with a blinking green light.
Charles almost laughed from relief.
It was still running.
They found the missing time window.
At 6:22, the alternate camera showed Vanessa opening the front door and pulling Eli inside by the hand.
She led him through the foyer and toward Daniel's office.
At 6:28, Daniel appeared at the end of the corridor.
He was wearing his dark sweater.
He walked toward the office door, stopped, and spoke to someone inside.
Vanessa stepped into the hallway and blocked his path.
The camera had no sound.
Daniel raised his hands in frustration.
Vanessa pointed toward the dining room.
Daniel stood there for several seconds.
Then he turned away.
At 6:35, Vanessa opened the office door and led Eli back toward the entrance.
The boy was crying.
She returned him to the porch.
Charles's hand tightened around the edge of the desk.
But Nora pointed at the screen.
"Keep watching."
At 6:39, Vanessa returned to Daniel's office alone.
She closed the door.
At 6:42, another person entered the frame.
It was not Daniel.
It was a man Charles did not recognize.
He wore a long tan coat and carried a leather briefcase.
Vanessa admitted him through the side entrance.
They disappeared into Daniel's office for nineteen minutes.
When the man left, he carried a large blue folder that had not been in his hand when he arrived.
Charles rewound the video.
"Who is that?"
Nora shook her head.
"I've never seen him."
Charles zoomed in on the man's briefcase.
There was a small silver logo near the handle.
He recognized it.
"Barton Capital."
Nora looked at him.
"The private lender?"
Charles nodded.
The Mercer Trust had rejected a financing proposal from Barton Capital six months earlier.
Vanessa had strongly supported it.
Charles had assumed the matter ended there.
Apparently, it had not.
Nora leaned closer to the screen.
"What was in the blue folder?"
Charles knew exactly where he had seen it before.
Daniel kept trust occupancy papers, property assessments, and old ownership records in a blue legal binder inside his office safe.
Charles pulled out his phone and called Daniel.
"Open your office safe."
Daniel sounded confused.
"Why?"
"Just open it."
A minute passed.
Then Daniel came back on the line.
His voice was barely audible.
"Dad, the trust binder is gone."
Charles looked again at the man leaving with the blue folder.

The night was no longer only about what Vanessa had done to Eli.
Someone had used those missing forty-three minutes to take documents that could put the entire Mercer property at risk.
