Chapter 8 - The Locked Study.

Charles reached the upstairs study first.
The door was closed, but the brass lock showed fresh scratches around the keyhole.
He inserted his key.
The door opened.
Nothing inside appeared disturbed.
That worried him more than a messy room would have.
The original trust records were kept inside a concealed wall safe behind an old landscape painting.
Charles moved the painting aside.
The safe door was closed.
He entered the code.
Inside, the red archival folder remained where he had left it.
Daniel exhaled.
"So she didn't get it."
Charles removed the folder and opened it.
The original signature page was missing.
Daniel stared at the empty plastic sleeve.
"How?"
Charles checked the safe log.
It had been opened three days earlier using Charles's master code.
Only Charles knew that code.
Or at least, only Charles was supposed to know it.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
"Looking for something?"
Daniel turned on her.
"You took it three days ago."
She leaned against the doorframe.
"Prove it."
Charles studied her.
"You watched me enter the code."
"Maybe."
"When?"
"You are not as careful as you think."
Charles felt a flash of anger at himself.
He had opened that safe during a family gathering two months earlier.
Vanessa had brought coffee into the study while he searched for an insurance document.
He had not thought twice about her standing behind him.
Daniel looked toward his father.
"Can Hale transfer the property with one signature page?"
"Not legally."
Vanessa smiled.
"Legally is a very flexible word when paperwork looks complete enough to move money before anyone asks questions."
Charles stared at her.
"So that was the plan."
"The plan was to keep Daniel's company alive."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not anymore."
Vanessa ignored him.
"You have millions sitting inside a trust while your own son was drowning."
Charles replied without raising his voice.
"The trust exists because money makes desperate people convince themselves that bad choices are necessary."
Vanessa laughed.
"Spare me the family wisdom."
A new voice came from the hallway.
"I would recommend you stop talking."
Claire Monroe entered the study wearing a long black coat over business clothes.
She carried a slim leather case and looked as calm as if it were noon instead of nearly one in the morning.
Vanessa stared at her.
"You got here quickly."
Claire looked at Charles.
"I was twenty minutes away."
Then she turned to Vanessa.
"Mr. Mercer told me enough on the phone to preserve every trust record before I left my house."
Vanessa's confidence shifted.
Claire opened her tablet.
"The property title cannot be transferred without trustee authorization, and no lender can obtain valid security from Daniel's beneficiary interest alone."
Daniel closed his eyes with relief.
Claire continued.
"However, an attempted fraudulent filing could create a very expensive problem for everyone involved."
Vanessa's face hardened.
"You cannot prove I filed anything."
Claire looked at Charles.
"Did you say there was a message from Hale?"
Charles nodded.
Vanessa immediately reached into her pocket.
Her phone was gone.
Daniel held it.
"Looking for this?"
She stepped toward him.
"Give me my phone."
Daniel placed it on the desk instead.
"Take it."
Vanessa stopped.
Something about his tone made her pause.
Claire looked at both of them.
"Nobody needs to seize anyone's phone."
She turned to Vanessa.
"But you may want to understand that deleting messages now will not make server records disappear."
Vanessa said nothing.
Charles opened the red folder again.
Inside the sleeve where the signature page had been, he found a folded piece of white paper.
It was not part of the trust.
He unfolded it.
A handwritten note appeared in black ink.
CHARLES - IF YOU FIND THIS, ASK DANIEL WHAT HAPPENED TO RACHEL'S LETTER.
Charles stared at the message.
Rachel was Eli's mother.
She had died two years earlier.
Daniel's face turned pale.
Charles slowly looked up.
"What letter?"
May you like
Daniel could not meet his eyes.
And suddenly, an old grief entered the room beside all the new secrets.
