Chapter 6 - The Man in the Tan Coat.

Daniel met Charles in the library shortly after midnight.

Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.

Nora stayed upstairs with Eli, who had finally fallen asleep.

Charles placed a still image from the gatehouse recording on the desk.

"Do you know him?"

Daniel stared at the man in the tan coat.

His shoulders dropped.

Charles noticed immediately.

"You do."

Daniel sat down.

"His name is Gregory Hale."

"Barton Capital?"

Daniel nodded.

Charles waited.

Daniel looked toward the closed library door.

"I made a mistake last year."

Charles said nothing.

"My investment firm lost two major clients."

"How much?"

"Enough that I panicked."

"How much, Daniel?"

Daniel gave him the number.

It was far larger than Charles expected.

Charles leaned back in his chair.

"And you borrowed from Barton?"

"Not officially."

"What does that mean?"

"Vanessa arranged a private bridge loan through Hale."

Charles's voice hardened.

"Secured by what?"

Daniel did not answer.

Charles already knew.

"You tried to use the mansion."

"I thought my beneficiary interest gave me enough authority."

"It does not."

"I know that now."

Charles stood and walked to the window.

Snow moved across the dark lawn in thin silver lines.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

Daniel laughed once without humor.

"Because you would have looked at me exactly the way you're looking at me now."

Charles turned.

"I am looking at you this way because your son spent nine hours outside while you protected your pride."

Daniel flinched.

"I know."

"Stop saying that like it repairs anything."

Daniel lowered his head.

For a moment, Charles saw the boy he had once raised instead of the man sitting in front of him.

That made the disappointment worse.

"What did Vanessa promise Hale?"

Daniel swallowed.

"She said she could get the trust documents needed to make the property appear available as collateral."

Charles stared at him.

"Forgery?"

"She called it restructuring."

"And you believed her?"

"At first."

"At first?"

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Three weeks ago, I told her I wanted out."

Charles remained silent.

"She said if I backed away, Hale would demand immediate repayment."

"And tonight?"

"I didn't know he was coming."

Charles pointed at the still image.

"The camera shows you outside your office while he was inside."

Daniel looked confused.

"I never saw Hale."

"Vanessa stopped you at the door."

Daniel thought for a moment.

"She told me Eli was inside recording an apology."

Charles's anger sharpened.

"And you walked away."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Yes."

A soft voice came from behind them.

"He always walks away."

Both men turned.

Vanessa stood in the library doorway.

She no longer held a wine glass.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

"How much did you hear?"

Charles asked.

"Enough."

Daniel stood.

"Where is the blue binder?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"Safe."

"With Hale?"

"For now."

Charles stepped closer.

"You stole trust documents from this house."

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"I removed copies."

"The safe is empty."

"Then perhaps you should ask your son what else he has hidden from you."

Daniel shook his head.

"Don't do this."

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked directly at Charles.

"You think Daniel is a frightened husband who got manipulated by me."

Charles said nothing.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Ask him who gave me the administrator code."

Charles slowly turned toward his son.

Daniel's face told him the answer.

Vanessa continued.

"Ask him who first suggested using the house to save his company."

Daniel whispered.

"Vanessa, stop."

She took one step backward into the hall.

"And ask him what he promised me if I could make Eli stop interfering with our life."

Charles felt the room go completely still.

Daniel stared at her in horror.

"That's not what I said."

May you like

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Then maybe we should listen to the recording."
