Chapter 7 - The Recording in the Drawer.

Vanessa walked into Daniel's office and opened the bottom drawer of his desk.

Charles followed her with Daniel only a step behind.

She removed a small digital recorder and placed it beside the empty safe.

"You recorded me?"

Daniel asked.

Vanessa gave him a cold look.

"I learned a long time ago to keep proof."

Charles looked at the device.

"Play it."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Dad, you need context."

"Then we will hear the context."

Vanessa pressed the button.

Daniel's voice filled the office.

The recording was dated eleven days earlier.

"I can't keep fighting with Eli every night."

Vanessa's recorded voice answered.

"Then let me handle him."

Daniel sighed on the recording.

"I need him to stop turning every disagreement into a call to my father."

Vanessa asked a question.

"So you want boundaries?"

Daniel answered.

"I want peace in this house."

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said the words Vanessa had clearly been waiting to reveal.

"Do whatever you need to do to make him understand that Grandpa cannot rescue him every time he dislikes a rule."

The recording ended.

Charles stared at his son.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"I meant take away television, cancel a weekend trip, normal discipline."

"You said whatever she needed to do."

"I didn't mean today."

Charles's voice became quiet.

"Words matter when you hand authority to someone who has already shown you how she uses it."

Daniel looked sick.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"There."

She looked almost triumphant.

"Now everyone can stop pretending Daniel is innocent."

Charles turned toward her.

"No one said he was."

Her confidence faltered slightly.

Charles pointed toward the recorder.

"His failure does not erase yours."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"He gave me permission to manage his child."

"He did not give you permission to create a dangerous situation."

"Dangerous according to you."

Charles took a slow breath.

"According to any reasonable adult."

Daniel stepped between them.

"Where are the documents?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because this is over."

"You don't get to decide that now."

"I am deciding it."

For the first time that night, Daniel sounded certain.

Vanessa studied him for several seconds.

Then she laughed softly.

"You think your father will save you too?"

Daniel did not answer.

"He won't."

Charles looked at his son.

"She's right about that."

Daniel turned toward him.

Charles continued.

"I will protect Eli."

He pointed to the empty safe.

"I will protect the trust."

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

"You will have to face your own choices."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I understand."

Vanessa looked between them with irritation.

The alliance she had expected to break was changing shape instead.

Charles took out his phone.

"I am calling Claire Monroe."

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

Claire was the Mercer Trust attorney.

She had also drafted the occupancy agreement allowing Daniel's family to live in the mansion.

"At midnight?"

Vanessa asked.

"She told me years ago to call anytime the trust was threatened."

Vanessa moved toward the doorway.

"You are turning a family argument into a legal circus."

Charles blocked her path without touching her.

"Where are the documents?"

"I told you."

"With Hale?"

"Yes."

Charles looked toward Daniel.

"Call him."

Daniel took out his phone.

Before he could dial, Vanessa's phone vibrated on the desk.

The screen lit up.

A message preview appeared from G. HALE.

Charles read it before Vanessa could grab the phone.

THE TRANSFER IS READY.

BRING THE ORIGINAL SIGNATURE PAGE BEFORE 8 A.M.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Original signature page?"

Charles already knew which page Hale meant.

There was only one original trust signature page kept in the mansion.

It was not in Daniel's office.

It was locked inside Charles's private study upstairs.

Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.

And Charles suddenly realized why she had been so determined to keep him occupied all night.
