Chapter 1: The Shattered Marble

The grand foyer of the Sterling Foundation headquarters was usually a place of quiet reverence, its white marble walls echoing with the hushed negotiations of the city’s philanthropic elite. Today, it was the site of a nightmare.

Harry Sterling, a distinguished man with striking silver hair and a sharply tailored charcoal suit, was pacing near the entrance when he heard it—a sharp gasp, followed by the terrifying, rhythmic thud of a body tumbling down the sweeping spiral staircase.

He spun around. Time seemed to fracture into agonizingly slow fragments.

"Chloe!" Harry roared, his voice tearing through the cavernous hall.

His wife, heavily pregnant and dressed in a soft, light blue maternity dress, lay crumpled at the bottom of the steps. Above her, at the very top of the landing, stood two figures frozen in the shadows: Harry’s estranged nephew, Arthur, and Arthur's wife, Beatrice. They didn't move to help. They just stared down, their expressions unreadable masks of shock—or perhaps, calculation.

Harry didn't care about them right now. His expensive leather shoes slipped on the polished floor as he scrambled to Chloe’s side, dropping to his knees with a heavy thud.

Her face was frighteningly pale, her breathing shallow and erratic. Beneath her, stark and terrifying against the pristine white marble, a small pool of dark crimson was already beginning to form.

Harry’s hands trembled as he cradled her head, supporting her neck. His heart hammered wildly against his ribs. "Chloe," he pleaded, his voice cracking with a desperation he had never known. "Chloe, stay with me. Don't close your eyes."

Chloe’s eyelashes fluttered. A tear slipped down her cheek, mingling with a smudge of dust on her face. Her hands moved weakly, instinctively clutching her swollen belly. The pain etched across her features was unbearable to witness.

She looked up at him, her eyes wide with a primal, agonizing fear. She wasn't crying for herself.

"Harry..." she gasped, her voice barely a whisper above the ringing silence of the lobby. "Please... save my baby."

Harry’s chest tightened as if bound by steel wire. He pressed his forehead gently against hers, trying to transfer every ounce of his strength into her fragile frame. "I will," he choked out. "I promise you, I will. Just hold on."

He looked up, his jaw clenching tightly. His eyes bypassed the arriving security guards and locked directly onto Arthur and Beatrice, who were finally taking slow, hesitant steps down the stairs. Harry’s sorrow instantly hardened into cold, razor-sharp fury. If they had anything to do with this, he would tear their world apart.
