Chapter 16: The Cold Stand

The King County Courthouse was an imposing structure of gray stone and echoing halls, a stark contrast to the warmth of the Sterling estate. Eight months had passed since the fall, but as Chloe walked through the heavy mahogany doors of Courtroom 3B, the chill of that marble staircase rushed back to her bones.
Harry walked beside her, his hand resting firmly on the small of her back. He was her anchor, his presence a silent, immovable shield against the flashing cameras of the press that had hounded them outside.
Today, Chloe had to testify.
Beatrice Sterling sat at the defense table, wearing a conservative beige suit that looked entirely out of character. She had tied her hair back severely, attempting to project an image of a demure, misunderstood woman. But when her eyes met Chloe’s across the aisle, the mask slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing the familiar, venomous calculation underneath.
Arthur had already taken a plea deal, trading his freedom for a lighter sentence and his testimony against his wife. But Beatrice had arrogantly refused every deal offered by the district attorney. She believed she could win. She believed she could lie her way out of it, just as she had done her entire life.
When the bailiff called Chloe to the stand, Harry gave her hand one last, reassuring squeeze. "You tell the truth," he whispered. "You are bulletproof."
Taking the oath, Chloe sat in the witness box and adjusted the microphone. The prosecuting attorney, a sharp woman named Ms. Vance, walked her gently through the events of that day. Chloe spoke clearly about her pregnancy, the joy she had felt, and the sudden, terrifying moment at the top of the stairs.
"Mrs. Sterling," Ms. Vance asked softly, "can you describe exactly what happened right before you fell?"
"I was looking down the stairs, waiting for my husband," Chloe said, her voice echoing in the silent courtroom. "Arthur was speaking to me, distracting me. Then I heard a footstep directly behind me. Before I could turn, I felt two hands plant squarely in the center of my back. And they shoved me. Hard."
"Are you certain it wasn't a slip? A loss of balance?"
"I am certain," Chloe replied, her gaze shifting to lock directly onto Beatrice. "I felt the force of the push. I was thrown forward. It was deliberate."
Then came the cross-examination. Beatrice’s defense attorney, a slick, aggressive man in a pinstripe suit, approached the podium.
"Mrs. Sterling, you had just suffered a horrific trauma," the defense attorney began, his tone dripping with patronizing sympathy. "You hit your head. You were bleeding. Is it not possible that in the chaos, your memory of the event became... distorted? That your brain manufactured a villain to explain a tragic, clumsy accident?"
Chloe’s hands trembled in her lap, but she forced herself to sit up straighter. She remembered the sheer terror of lying in the blood, pleading for her baby's life. The fear vanished, replaced by a mother's fierce, protective anger.

"I remember everything," Chloe stated, her voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable clarity. "I remember the smell of her perfume when she stepped behind me. I remember the sharp edges of her rings pressing through the fabric of my dress when she pushed me. It was not an accident. She tried to kill me, and she tried to kill my daughter."
The courtroom fell dead silent. Even the defense attorney seemed briefly taken aback by the raw, undeniable truth radiating from the witness stand. Beatrice’s jaw clenched, her carefully constructed facade fracturing under the weight of Chloe’s defiance.
