Chapter 12: The Wire

Beatrice was pacing the length of their luxurious downtown penthouse when Arthur burst through the front door, waving the manila folder.

"He did it!" Arthur shouted, a manic grin plastered across his face. "The old fool actually did it! He gave me signatory power over the primary grant fund."

Beatrice stopped pacing, her eyes narrowing sharply. "Let me see that."

She snatched the folder from his hands, her eyes scanning the signatures and the legal clauses. A slow, triumphant smile finally spread across her red-painted lips. "It’s ironclad. He really is broken. He just handed you the keys to the kingdom."

"We can pay off the Macau debt," Arthur said, pacing excitedly. "I can wire the fifteen million to the offshore account this afternoon. The loan sharks get off my back, and we can slowly replenish the Foundation fund using the quarterly dividends before Harry even comes back from his leave."

"It’s foolproof," Beatrice agreed, tossing the folder onto the glass coffee table. "You need to initiate the wire transfer immediately. Do it from your secure laptop. Once the money clears in the Caymans, those thugs will finally leave us alone."

Arthur wasted no time. He booted up his laptop, logged into the Foundation’s banking portal using his newly authorized credentials, and began the process of moving fifteen million dollars. His hands were shaking as he typed in the routing numbers for the offshore shell company.

"Done," Arthur breathed out, hitting the final authorization key. "The wire is processing."

He slumped back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. "It's over, Bea. We survived."

Meanwhile, three floors below the Sterling Foundation, in a windowless room humming with servers, Frank sat in front of a bank of monitors, chewing on an unlit cigar.

A red alert flashed across his screen.

Frank chuckled, picking up his phone and hitting speed dial. "Harry. He took the cheese. He just initiated a fifteen-million-dollar wire transfer to a shell company in the Cayman Islands."

"Did you freeze it?" Harry asked, his voice crystal clear and devoid of all the fake exhaustion he had displayed earlier.

"Froze the transfer, flagged it as fraudulent embezzlement in the bank's system, and routed a copy of the IP logs and transaction data directly to the FBI’s white-collar crime division," Frank confirmed. "It’s a federal offense now, Harry. Wire fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering. He’s going down."

"Good," Harry said. "Now, notify the Seattle Police Department. Tell them I’m ready to formally press charges for the attempted murder of my wife. I have the audio recording, and I have an eyewitness. Give them everything."

"It's going to be a bloodbath, Harry."

"That," Harry replied coldly, "is exactly the point."
