Chapter 22: First Steps into the World

The late August sun was shining brightly over the manicured sidewalks of their quiet Seattle neighborhood. It was a Tuesday morning, but the energy in the Sterling household was electric, charged with a mixture of immense excitement and a healthy dose of parental anxiety.

Today was Lily's first day of preschool.

Harry was kneeling by the front door, struggling to fasten the tiny straps on a pair of light-up sneakers. "Lily, bug, you have to hold still," he laughed, trying to catch her wiggling foot. "You can't go to school with one shoe."

"But I want to go now!" Lily giggled, bouncing on her free foot. She was wearing a bright denim jumper and a miniature backpack shaped like a yellow bumblebee.

"We have plenty of time," Chloe said, coming down the stairs and snapping a picture with her phone. "Oh, my heart. Look at you. You look so big."

Harry finally secured the shoe and stood up, letting out a long sigh. He looked at his daughter, his chest tightening with that familiar, protective ache. "Are you sure she’s ready for this? What if the other kids are mean? What if she doesn't like the snacks? I can just hire a tutor. She can go to college from the living room."

"Harry," Chloe laughed, walking over and fixing the collar of his shirt. "She is going to be perfectly fine. She is brave, she is smart, and she is a Sterling. The other kids better watch out."

"I just... she was so small," Harry murmured, his mind briefly flashing back to the tiny, fragile infant in the plastic incubator. It was a memory that never truly faded, making these normal, everyday milestones feel like absolute miracles.

Chloe understood perfectly. She leaned up and kissed him softly. "I know. But look at her now."

They walked out to the SUV, buckling Lily into her car seat. The drive to the prestigious little preschool was filled with Lily singing loudly along to the radio, her excitement completely infectious.

When they pulled up to the brick building, the playground was already swarming with children and parents. Harry parked the car, and he and Chloe each took one of Lily's small hands as they walked toward the front gates.

A smiling teacher was waiting by the entrance, wearing a brightly colored nametag. "Good morning! Welcome to the ladybug class! Are we ready for a fun day?"

Lily didn't hesitate. She dropped her parents' hands, gave them a quick, highly distracted wave, and marched straight toward a group of kids playing with building blocks on the rug.

"Well," Harry said, standing at the gate with his hands in his pockets, watching his daughter immediately take charge of a red plastic block. "She certainly didn't look back."

"That means we did our job," Chloe said, sliding her arm through his and resting her head on his shoulder. "She feels safe enough to explore the world."

Harry watched Lily laugh as a block tower tumbled over. The fierce, terrifying desire to protect her from everything had slowly evolved into the beautiful privilege of watching her grow.

"We did good, Mrs. Sterling," Harry said, a warm, contented smile spreading across his face.

"We really did," Chloe agreed.

They stood there for a long time, watching their brave, beautiful miracle take her first steps into a bright, unbroken future, knowing that whatever came next, they would face it exactly as they always had: together.
