Chapter 25: Unbreakable

The gala had ended hours ago. The babysitter had been sent home in a cab, and the Sterling estate was enveloped in the deep, peaceful quiet of the early morning hours.

Harry walked out onto the back patio, carrying two mugs of chamomile tea. The night air was cool, carrying the faint scent of the Puget Sound. He found Chloe sitting on a plush outdoor sofa, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket, looking up at the stars.

He handed her a mug and sat beside her, pulling the edge of the blanket over his own lap.

"Lily is out cold," Harry whispered. "She tried to stay awake to hear about the gala, but she fell asleep holding a textbook on marine biology."

Chloe laughed softly, resting her head against his shoulder. "She's going to be a force of nature, Harry. Just wait until she's a teenager."

"I am terrified," Harry admitted with a smile, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "But I think we can handle it."

They sat in comfortable silence for a long time, watching the slow, majestic drift of the clouds across the moon. The journey they had taken to reach this patio, on this quiet night, felt impossibly long. They had faced the absolute worst of human nature—greed, betrayal, and violence—and they had not only survived, but they had also thrived.

"Do you ever think about them?" Chloe asked quietly, her breath pluming in the cool air. She didn't need to specify who 'them' meant.

"Rarely," Harry answered honestly. "Sometimes, when the leaves turn in the fall, I remember the cold in the hospital. But the anger is gone, Chloe. They took their own lives away with their choices. We kept ours."

Chloe turned slightly, looking at her husband’s profile in the moonlight. The silver hair, the lines around his eyes—every mark was a testament to the life they had built and the battles they had won.

"I was so scared on those stairs, Harry," Chloe whispered, a rare admission of the vulnerability she usually kept hidden. "When I felt her hands on my back... I thought it was the end of everything."

Harry set his mug down on the patio table and turned to fully face her. He took both of her hands in his, his grip warm and infinitely reassuring.

"It wasn't the end," Harry said, his voice carrying the fierce, unwavering devotion that had defined their entire marriage. "It was the forge. It burned away everything that didn't matter. The money, the status, the toxic family ties—it all burned away. And what was left was you, me, and Lily."

He reached up, gently tracing the line of her jaw.

"They tried to break us, my love. But they didn't know what we were made of."

Chloe smiled, a deep, soul-settling peace washing over her. She leaned forward, pressing her lips to his in a tender, lingering kiss. When they pulled away, she looked back up at the vast, starlit sky, feeling the steady, rhythmic beating of Harry’s heart against her side.

The marble had shattered, yes. But from the broken pieces, they had built a fortress. And within its walls, surrounded by the laughter of their daughter and the enduring warmth of their love, they were finally, truly unbreakable.
