Chapter 1 - The Watch in the Backpack.

.The living room fell into a brittle silence.

Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows and turned every white surface painfully bright.

Lily Mercer sat on the rug with her knees pulled against her chest.

Her beige backpack lay open beside her like a body that had been searched after a crime.

Vanessa Cole stood over her in a pink blazer, one hand planted on her hip and the other pointed at the child’s face.

“You dirty thief, confess right now!”

Lily flinched as though the words had struck her.

“I didn’t take anything.”

Vanessa laughed without humor.

“That is exactly what a thief would say.”

Ethan Mercer stood near the white sofa, his confusion deepening as he watched his fiancée turn an accusation into a performance.

He had come home early because Lily’s school had called to say she had left class in tears.

He had expected a disagreement.

He had not expected to find Vanessa demanding that an eleven-year-old admit to stealing a family heirloom.

“What is missing?” Ethan asked.

Vanessa turned toward him with a look of offended disbelief.

“Your mother’s gold watch.”

The words landed harder than Ethan expected.

The watch had belonged to Evelyn Mercer, his mother, and had disappeared from the bedroom safe that morning.

It was one of the few objects Ethan had kept after her death.

He looked at Lily.

She had known what the watch meant to him.

Her frightened eyes met his for only a second before dropping to the floor.

Vanessa seized the backpack and pushed it toward Ethan.

“Search it.”

Ethan did not move.

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“Search it, unless you want to protect her again.”

Lily whispered his name.

“Uncle Ethan.”

The plea in her voice made him kneel beside the bag.

He hated himself for touching the zipper.

He hated Vanessa for making the moment feel like a test of loyalty.

He reached into the main compartment and moved aside a math book, two pencils, and a folded UCLA sweatshirt.

His fingers struck something cold.

The gold watch emerged in his palm.

Lily stared at it with open horror.

Ethan’s chest tightened.

“I swear I didn’t put that in there.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

The satisfaction on her face arrived too quickly.

“Have her arrested.”

Ethan looked at her.

For one suspended moment, the entire room seemed to tilt.

Lily began shaking.

“You said you would never send me away.”

Ethan placed the watch on the coffee table.

“No one is calling the police.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

“She stole from us.”

“She is a child.”

“She is old enough to know exactly what she is doing.”

Lily pressed both hands over her ears.

Vanessa kept speaking as though the child were no longer in the room.

“She lies.”

“She manipulates you.”

“She has been trying to ruin us since I moved in.”

Ethan felt something cold settle behind his ribs.

Lily had been difficult after her mother’s death.

She had nightmares.

She hid food in drawers.

She sometimes refused to speak for hours.

But she had never stolen.

Vanessa reached for her phone.

“I will make the call myself.”

Ethan caught her wrist before she could unlock it.

He released her immediately, but Vanessa’s eyes flashed with triumph.

“Now you are threatening me too.”

“I am stopping you from terrorizing a child.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She is not your daughter.”

The sentence changed the room.

Lily lowered her hands.

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“She is my family.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“And I am supposed to become your wife.”

A notification buzzed in Ethan’s pocket.

He ignored it.

Another notification followed.

Then a third.

The alerts came from the home security application.

Ethan pulled out his smartphone.

The camera system had detected unusual movement near the upstairs hallway two hours earlier.

Vanessa saw the screen and turned away too quickly.

Ethan opened the recording.

The first clip showed an empty hallway.

The second showed Vanessa leaving the bedroom with the gold watch in her hand.

The third showed her entering the living room while Lily was at school.

Ethan’s breathing stopped.

On the screen, Vanessa crouched beside the beige backpack.

She opened the front pocket.

She slid the gold watch inside.

She looked directly toward the security camera.

Then she smiled.

The recording ended.

Ethan replayed it.

The woman on the screen did the same thing again.

She planted the watch.

She closed the bag.

She smiled.

Ethan slowly raised his head.

Vanessa’s smugness had disappeared.

“What did you do?” he asked.

She took one step backward.

“That video is wrong.”

Ethan held up the phone.

“It is you.”

“It could be edited.”

“It came from our security system.”

Vanessa glanced toward the front door.

Ethan moved between her and the hallway.

“You framed her.”

His voice broke into a shout.

“You framed a child.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“She was going to destroy our marriage.”

“You did that yourself.”

Lily began crying harder.

Ethan pointed toward the staircase.

“Pack your things.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You will regret humiliating me.”

“Pack your things and leave.”

Her expression changed again.

The fear disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

“You think one video saves her?”

Ethan said nothing.

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“You have no idea what I already filed.”

The front doorbell rang.

Three heavy knocks followed.

A man’s voice came through the intercom.

“Mr. Mercer, this is Child Protective Services.”

Lily looked at Ethan in terror.

May you like

Vanessa smiled.

This time, she did not bother hiding it.
