Chapter 4 - The Man Claiming to Be Her Father.

.Marcus refused to explain over the phone.
He repeated the warning and ended the call.
Nora disconnected every smart device in the house from the network.
She copied the microSD card onto three encrypted drives.
One went into Ethan’s pocket.
One remained with Nora.
The third was hidden inside Lily’s old stuffed rabbit.
Ethan hated involving a child in the protection of evidence.
He hated more that Ava had apparently faced the same choice.
At six in the morning, a process server delivered the emergency custody petition.
Daniel Voss claimed he had lived with Ava for nearly a year.
He claimed she had concealed Lily’s birth after their relationship ended.
He produced photographs of himself beside Ava at several events.
He produced text messages that appeared affectionate.
He produced a private DNA test indicating a ninety-nine percent probability of paternity.
Lily read the first page over Ethan’s shoulder.
“Is he my dad?”
Ethan folded the document.
“I don’t know.”
“You always say that when the answer is bad.”
“I say it when I refuse to lie.”
Lily turned away.
Nora examined the photographs.
“The dates are real.”
Ethan felt sick.
Ava had never mentioned Daniel.
Nora enlarged one image.
Daniel stood beside Ava at a foundation gala.
Richard Cole stood behind them.
Marcus was visible at the edge of the frame.
The same four people had crossed paths years before Ethan met Vanessa.
That could not be coincidence.
The emergency hearing was scheduled for noon.
Ethan’s regular family attorney had a conflict because Marcus’s firm had handled the guardianship.
Nora recommended her sister, Rachel Chen, a litigation attorney known for moving faster than people expected.
Rachel arrived wearing sneakers and carrying two legal pads.
She read the petition in silence.
Then she looked at Ethan.
“Someone wants the court to believe you have been hiding a child from her father.”
“They are lying.”
“Parts of the story may be true.”
Ethan bristled.
Rachel did not soften her voice.
“We do not win by calling everything a lie.”
“We win by proving which truths were weaponized.”
Lily sat at the dining table.
Rachel asked permission before speaking directly to her.
“Do you remember Daniel Voss?”
Lily shook her head.
“Do you remember your mother using the name Daniel?”
Another shake.
“Do you want to meet him today?”
“No.”
Rachel nodded.
“That matters.”
At the courthouse, Vanessa waited near the elevators.
She wore a white coat and carried no luggage.
Her expression suggested she had slept better than anyone else.
Daniel Voss stood beside her.
He was handsome in a controlled, forgettable way.
He looked at Lily with tears in his eyes.
“My little girl.”
Lily stepped behind Ethan.
Daniel stopped.
Vanessa placed a hand on his arm.
“Give her time.”
Ethan’s anger surged.
Rachel whispered beside him.
“Do not perform for their camera.”
Ethan saw a man recording from across the hallway.
The hearing began in a small courtroom with no jury.
Daniel’s attorney described Ethan as possessive and unstable.
She submitted the child protective reports.
She submitted a statement from Vanessa claiming Ethan had repeatedly isolated Lily from potential relatives.
Vanessa testified that she had tried to protect the girl.
She cried while describing the staged theft as a “desperate test.”
The judge frowned.
“You placed an heirloom in a child’s backpack to test her?”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I believed Mr. Mercer would refuse to acknowledge obvious misconduct.”
The judge’s expression showed disgust, but not enough.
Daniel testified next.
He claimed Ava had promised to tell Lily about him when she turned ten.
He claimed Richard Cole had helped him search after Ava disappeared from his life.
He claimed Ethan had blocked every attempt at contact.
Rachel stood.
“Did you ever send Mr. Mercer a letter?”
“No.”
“An email?”
“No.”
“A certified notice?”
“No.”
“Did you attend Ms. Mercer’s funeral?”
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“No.”
“Did you file for paternity while Ms. Mercer was alive?”
“No.”
“Then your first legal effort to meet your alleged daughter occurred two years after her mother died and one day before a gold watch containing financial evidence was discovered.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Only for a second.
Rachel saw it.
The judge saw it too.
Daniel’s attorney objected.
Rachel had not yet introduced the watch.
The judge ordered a short recess.
In the hallway, Daniel approached Lily.
Ethan stepped between them.
Daniel held up both hands.
“I am not here to hurt her.”
Lily looked around Ethan’s arm.
“Did you know my mom?”
Daniel’s face softened.
“Yes.”
“What was her favorite song?”
Daniel froze.
Lily waited.
He named a popular love song.
Lily shook her head.
“She hated that song.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
Vanessa pulled him away.
The hearing resumed.
The judge denied immediate transfer of custody.
However, she ordered supervised visitation for Daniel pending an independent DNA test.
She also ordered Ethan not to remove Lily from the state.
It was not defeat.
It did not feel like victory.
Outside the courthouse, reporters gathered around Vanessa.
She told them she wanted only safety and truth.
Ethan led Lily toward the parking garage.
Nora called.
Her voice was urgent.
“I traced the camera shutdown.”
“Was it Marcus?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“The command came from a county government network.”
Ethan stopped walking.
Celia Grant appeared at the far end of the garage.
She was not alone.
Marcus stood beside her.
He held a folder against his chest.
Celia looked directly at Lily.
Then she handed Marcus an emergency removal order.

Ethan had been restrained by the court from leaving the state.
Someone had used the same hearing to arrange for Lily to leave with them.
