Chapter 5 - The Removal Order.

.Ethan read the removal order twice.
The signature at the bottom belonged to a different judge.
The document alleged an immediate risk of retaliation after the custody hearing.
Celia stated that Lily would be placed in temporary protective care.
Rachel stepped between her and the child.
“This order was issued without notice to counsel.”
“It was issued under emergency authority.”
“On whose affidavit?”
Celia did not answer.
Marcus avoided Ethan’s eyes.
Lily held onto Ethan’s coat with both hands.
“I’m not going.”
Celia’s expression tightened.
“I know this is frightening.”
“You brought the woman who hurt me into my house.”
Celia glanced toward Marcus.
Ethan saw uncertainty.
He seized it.
“Ask Lily who caused the bruises.”
Vanessa appeared behind the glass doors leading to the garage.
She had followed them.
Lily saw her.
Her grip on Ethan’s coat loosened.
Fear changed her face so completely that Celia could no longer ignore it.
Rachel spoke quietly.
“Interview the child before you enforce anything.”
Celia hesitated.
Marcus stepped closer.
“The order requires immediate transfer.”
Rachel looked at him.
“You are not counsel of record.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
Daniel’s lawyer entered the garage with two private security guards.
The scene had been arranged.
The order.
The timing.
The cameras waiting near the exit.
Ethan understood that someone wanted footage of him resisting.
Rachel whispered.
“Hands visible.”
Ethan kept them at his sides.
Lily began to cry.
Celia crouched in front of her.
“Did Vanessa hurt you?”
Lily looked at Ethan.
He nodded once.
“You can tell her.”
Lily pulled up the sleeve of her UCLA hoodie.
The bruises had faded, but the shapes remained.
“She grabbed me when I tried to call Uncle Ethan.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That is a lie.”
Celia raised a hand.
“Do not approach.”
Vanessa stopped.
Lily continued.
“She told me if I made him choose, he would send me away.”
Celia looked toward the removal order.
Then toward Marcus.
“Who prepared the supporting affidavit?”
Marcus said nothing.
Celia’s face hardened.
“I asked you a question.”
Daniel’s lawyer intervened.
“The order is valid.”
Rachel held out her hand.
“Then provide the affidavit.”
The lawyer refused.
Rachel called the judge’s chambers.
Within minutes, the garage filled with courthouse deputies.
The emergency order had been signed electronically at 4:12 that morning.
The issuing judge was on vacation.
His credentials had been used from an external address.
The order was fraudulent.
Celia looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath her.
Marcus moved toward the elevator.
Ethan blocked the path without touching him.
“Why did Ava meet you before she died?”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Not here.”
“You told me to run.”
“Because the people behind this will not stop.”
“You helped them.”
Marcus’s eyes filled with something that looked like shame.
“I helped Ava hide the evidence.”
“Then why is your name in every trap?”
Marcus glanced toward the security guards.
One of them reached inside his jacket.
Nora shouted from behind a concrete pillar.
“Gun!”
The garage erupted.
A deputy tackled the guard.
The second guard ran.
Vanessa screamed and dropped to the floor.
Daniel pulled Lily toward him.
She bit his hand.
Ethan reached her first.
The fleeing guard fired once toward the ceiling.
Concrete dust rained down.
Marcus grabbed Celia and dragged her behind a car.
Nora followed the guard through the exit stairwell.
Deputies secured the garage.
The man with the gun carried no identification.
His phone contained a single recent message.
If the transfer fails, take the girl.
The sender was saved as RC.
Richard Cole.
Vanessa’s father.
Vanessa denied knowing anything about the armed men.
Daniel denied it too.
The deputies separated them.
Marcus finally agreed to speak.
He told Rachel that Ava had discovered Richard’s charity fraud.
She had also discovered that Daniel Voss was not Lily’s father.
Daniel had been paid to create the appearance of a relationship.
The photographs were taken during foundation events.
The messages were fabricated from old email fragments.
“What about the DNA test?” Ethan asked.
Marcus looked at Lily.
“The sample was not hers.”
“Whose was it?”
Marcus’s answer came slowly.
“Vanessa’s.”
The statement made no sense until Rachel understood it.
“Daniel is Vanessa’s biological father?”
Marcus nodded.
Vanessa heard him from across the garage.
Her face drained of color.
She looked at Daniel.
He refused to meet her eyes.
Richard Cole had raised Vanessa as his daughter.
The DNA test proved Daniel was related to Vanessa, not Lily.
Someone had mislabeled the sample to manufacture paternity.
Vanessa began shouting.
“You are lying.”
Daniel backed away from her.
Marcus continued.
“Richard used Daniel for years.”
“He used everyone.”
Ethan asked the question that mattered most.
“Why frame Lily for the watch?”
“Because Richard believed Ava hid the account key inside it.”
Marcus looked at the beige backpack, which Ethan still carried.
“He needed Vanessa to find the watch without appearing to search for it.”
Lily whispered.
“She put it in my bag so everyone would open it.”
Marcus nodded.
“The accusation was supposed to separate Lily from Ethan and place her with Daniel.”
Rachel’s phone rang.
Nora had caught the second guard near the street.
She had also found a van registered to a private youth transport company.
Inside were restraints, sedatives, and a photograph of Lily.
Celia stepped away to be sick.
Ethan wrapped his coat around his niece.
Marcus moved closer.
“There is one more thing.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Ava’s crash was not ordered by Richard.”
“Then who ordered it?”
May you like
Marcus’s eyes shifted toward Vanessa.
“She did.”
