Chapter 8 - Whitebridge.

.Its screen showed a live feed of Lily tied to a chair in an unknown room.

She was awake.

She looked directly into the camera.

A speaker activated.

Richard’s voice filled the basement.

“Mr. Mercer has something that belongs to me.”

Ethan listened through Ramirez’s secure call.

Richard demanded the original microSD card.

Nora still possessed one complete copy.

The stuffed rabbit copy had been taken.

Ethan carried the second.

Richard believed the card in the rabbit was the only backup.

That gave them one advantage.

Richard set a meeting for midnight at the Mercer Foundation archive.

He required Ethan to come alone.

Ramirez prepared a tracking plan.

Ethan studied Lily’s live image.

Her right hand rested on the chair arm.

She tapped one finger slowly.

Three taps.

Pause.

Two taps.

Pause.

Three taps.

Nora recognized it as a camera file number.

She searched the foundation surveillance archive.

Camera 323 covered an old underground records vault.

Lily was already inside the foundation headquarters.

Richard had directed the police north while keeping her in the center of the city.

Ethan looked at the dark windows of the tower across downtown.

The building where Vanessa had first introduced herself.

The building where Ava had discovered the stolen money.

The building where Richard intended to erase the final witness.

Then Lily’s live feed changed.

Vanessa entered the room.

She placed the gold watch around Lily’s wrist.

“You wanted to be part of this family,” Vanessa said.

“Now you can disappear with it.”

.Agent Ramirez divided the operation into two teams.

One would enter the foundation tower through the parking levels.

The other would approach the archive tunnel from the neighboring courthouse.

Ethan was told to remain inside the command van.

He agreed until he saw Marcus on a security feed entering the tower alone.

Marcus had violated the protective order and disappeared after the garage attack.

Now he carried a black duffel bag toward the basement.

Ethan left the van before Ramirez could stop him.

He crossed the street through service traffic and entered the courthouse loading dock.

Rachel followed him.

“You are making every future hearing harder.”

“I will survive a hearing.”

“Lily may not survive your plan.”

The sentence stopped him.

Rachel pointed toward the tunnel entrance.

“You do not know whether Marcus is helping Richard or trying to undo what he did.”

Ethan looked at the live feed on Nora’s tablet.

Vanessa stood behind Lily.

Richard entered carrying a metal case.

Daniel followed.

The conspiracy had gathered in one room.

Marcus reached the archive door from the outer corridor.

He placed the duffel bag on the floor.

Inside were cutting tools and a body camera.

He sent a text to Ethan.

I can open the east vent.

Three minutes.

Ethan showed Ramirez.

She reluctantly approved a controlled entry.

Marcus cut power to the archive lock.

The live feed flickered.

Vanessa pulled Lily upright.

Richard shouted for Daniel to secure the door.

Lily twisted her wrist and the gold watch fell to the floor.

She kicked it beneath a cabinet.

Vanessa slapped her.

Ethan saw the strike on screen.

Every restraint Rachel had demanded vanished inside him.

He ran through the tunnel.

Agents moved behind him.

Marcus opened the east vent.

The archive smelled of dust, paper, and electrical heat.

Ethan crawled through the narrow passage until he reached a grate above the records room.

Below him, Richard held a gun.

Daniel paced near the door.

Vanessa searched beneath the cabinet for the watch.

Lily looked upward.

She saw Ethan behind the grate.

Her expression did not change.

She had learned to hide hope.

Richard opened the metal case.

Inside was a portable drive shredder.

He wanted the account key and the original card destroyed together.

Daniel demanded payment before releasing Lily.

Vanessa turned on him.

“You are worried about money now?”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Your father promised me a new life twenty years ago.”

“He gave you one.”

“He took my daughter.”

Vanessa froze.

Richard raised the gun toward Daniel.

“Elena was never yours.”

The sentence exposed the truth.

Daniel and Elena had planned to leave Richard.

Richard placed Elena in Whitebridge and kept Vanessa.

He told each that the other had abandoned them.

Daniel had served him afterward because Richard threatened to kill Vanessa if he resisted.

Vanessa looked at Richard.

“You said he sold us.”

Richard’s face remained cold.

“I said what a child needed to believe.”

Lily watched them fracture.

Then she moved.

She dropped to the floor and crawled toward the watch.

Vanessa grabbed her dress.

Lily kicked backward.

The cabinet rocked.

The gold watch slid into view.

Richard fired.

The bullet struck the metal cabinet and shattered a light.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Agents breached the west door.

Daniel tackled Richard.

Vanessa dragged Lily toward a service exit.

Ethan kicked through the vent grate.

He landed hard on the archive table.

Vanessa saw him.

She pressed a broken piece of glass against Lily’s throat.

“Stay back.”

Ethan stopped.

Lily’s eyes met his.

Vanessa backed toward the exit.

“You ruined everything.”

Ethan kept his hands raised.

“You framed a child because you were afraid of a watch.”

“I framed her because she took you from me.”

“She was here first.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“I spent my whole life being second.”

Richard shouted from the floor.

“Do not talk.”

Vanessa ignored him.

She told Ethan that Ava had shown her the DNA records.

Ava intended to expose Richard and free Elena.

Vanessa believed exposure would destroy the only family she knew.

She followed Ava’s car that night.

She forced her off the road.

The confession came out in pieces.

Rage.

Fear.

Jealousy.

A child’s loyalty preserved inside an adult capable of murder.

Rachel’s phone recorded every word from the tunnel.

Vanessa did not know.

Lily did.

She kept Vanessa talking.

“Did my mom ask you to stop?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said you were in the back seat.”

Ethan’s heart stopped.

Lily had been in Ava’s car.

Ava had survived the first impact long enough to remove her from the wreck.

Vanessa had watched.

She had left them there.

Lily’s memory had buried the scene.

Now it returned.

“You stood by the trees,” Lily whispered.

Vanessa’s grip loosened.

Lily ducked.

Ethan crossed the distance.

He pulled Lily behind him as agents seized Vanessa.

Richard was handcuffed.

Daniel surrendered.

Marcus stood in the doorway with blood on his sleeve.

The archive sprinklers activated.

Water poured over the records.

Richard began laughing.

“You think you won?”

He looked toward the shredder.

A red light blinked.

The device had already connected to the foundation server.

Every digital archive was being erased.

Nora’s voice came through Ethan’s earpiece.

May you like

“The deletion is spreading.”

Ava’s evidence was disappearing in real time.
