Chapter 7 - The Window Across the Street.

.Ethan opposed the move.
Lily surprised him.
“I want to go.”
He looked at her.
“You do not have to leave me.”
“I want one night where nobody knows where I am.”
The truth of that request humbled him.
Ethan accompanied her to the safe apartment.
Rachel remained outside the bedroom while Lily spoke with a court-appointed child advocate.
The advocate was a quiet woman named Miriam Shaw.
She did not ask leading questions.
She did not mention theft, inheritance, or paternity.
She asked Lily what made her feel safe.
“My uncle when he believes me.”
Ethan heard the answer through the partially open door.
It was both gift and punishment.
Miriam asked what made her feel unsafe.
“Vanessa smiling.”
Lily described the night the bruises appeared.
She had discovered Vanessa searching Ava’s metal box.
She tried to take a photograph.
Vanessa grabbed her arm and deleted the image.
Then Vanessa threatened to tell Ethan that Lily had attacked her.
Lily believed the threat because Vanessa had already begun documenting small conflicts.
She photographed broken cups.
She saved recordings of Lily crying.
She created a file that made grief look like violence.
Miriam asked whether anyone else knew.
Lily mentioned Marcus.
She had called him once.
Marcus told her to stay quiet until he could speak with Ethan.
He never did.
Ethan understood that Marcus’s cowardice had protected the scheme.
That evening, Nora traced the account-key attempt from Ethan’s house.
The device belonged to a phone registered to Elena Cole.
Vanessa’s missing mother.
The phone had been activated six weeks earlier.
Ethan searched the foundation files for Elena.
He found no death certificate.
Only a resignation letter and a sealed settlement.
Rachel obtained a court order to unseal the document.
Elena had accused Richard of unlawful confinement.
She withdrew the claim after receiving a payment through Whitebridge Recovery.
The address listed for her after the settlement belonged to one of Whitebridge’s residential facilities.
Ethan felt the pattern closing around them.
Ava had not been the first woman Richard erased through paperwork.
Nora located a current medical billing record under Elena’s name.
She was alive.
She was a patient at a private psychiatric hospital outside the city.
Rachel arranged an emergency interview.
Before Ethan could leave, Miriam called him into the bedroom.
Lily sat on the edge of the bed holding her stuffed rabbit.
“There is something inside.”
Ethan assumed she meant the backup drive.
Lily pulled at the seam.
A tiny tracking device fell onto the blanket.
It was not Nora’s.
Someone had sewn it into the rabbit before they left the Mercer house.
Vanessa had known Lily would take it.
State police swept the apartment.
No other device was found.
The safe location was no longer safe.
They prepared to move immediately.
The hallway lights went out.
A fire alarm began to ring.
Smoke rolled under the apartment door.
The officers opened the emergency stairwell.
People rushed downward.
Ethan held Lily’s hand.
On the seventh-floor landing, someone in a firefighter’s coat pushed between them.
The gloved person struck Ethan in the throat.
His grip loosened for one second.
Lily screamed.
The firefighter lifted her and disappeared into the smoke.
Ethan followed, coughing and half-blind.
At the ground-floor exit, he found the yellow stripe of the firefighter’s coat lying on the pavement.
Lily was gone.
Her stuffed rabbit remained in the street.
The hidden backup drive had been removed.
.The city issued an Amber Alert within minutes.
Vanessa appeared on television before the alert finished spreading.
She stood beside Richard and begged for Lily’s safe return.
Her tears looked real.
Ethan watched from the police command center and felt hatred settle into a frightening calm.
The kidnappers had taken Lily and the evidence at the same time.
That meant the child was not only leverage.
She was a witness they intended to control.
Nora examined traffic cameras near the apartment.
The person in the firefighter’s coat entered a white medical transport van.
The license plate belonged to Whitebridge Recovery.
The van disappeared from public cameras after entering an industrial tunnel.
Rachel contacted federal investigators.
The foundation records gave them jurisdiction over interstate fraud.
Agent Sofia Ramirez took command.
She had spent two years investigating private youth facilities but had never connected Whitebridge to Richard.
“The children vanish into contracts,” she said.
“Parents sign temporary custody agreements.”
“Courts see licensed providers.”
“By the time anyone complains, the child has been moved across three states.”
Ethan handed her Ava’s files.
“Find Lily first.”
Ramirez did not promise.
She ordered raids on six Whitebridge properties.
Five were empty.
The sixth contained twelve children and no Lily.
One child remembered a girl in a gray UCLA hoodie being moved through the building.
She had been crying but had scratched something into the wall.
Agents found three letters beneath a window.
E M V.
Ethan understood.
Evelyn Mercer’s initials.
Lily was leaving references only he would recognize.
The gold watch carried the same initials.
Nora studied the Whitebridge corporate map.
One property had once belonged to Evelyn.
An abandoned lakeside school two hours north.
Richard had purchased it after her death through a shell company.
Ramirez sent tactical teams.
Ethan was ordered to remain behind.
He refused.
Rachel told him that forcing his way into an operation would help Vanessa portray him as reckless.
He stayed.
The waiting was worse than fear.
At the lakeside school, agents found sedatives, restraints, and recently used rooms.
Lily was not there.
On a classroom wall, she had drawn a small clock with the hands pointing to four and seven.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
“Four seven.”
Nora searched addresses, route numbers, and account codes.
Nothing fit.
Ethan remembered Evelyn’s old habit.
She used clock positions to describe locations in photographs.
Four o’clock meant lower right.
Seven o’clock meant lower left.
The drawing contained two tiny marks in those positions.
Nora enlarged them.
One resembled a bridge.
The other resembled a bell.
A bridge and a bell.
Rachel searched Whitebridge property records.
There was an abandoned convent near Bell Bridge Road.
The building did not appear on the current company list.
Ramirez redirected the teams.
Meanwhile, Vanessa’s televised appeal changed.
She accused Ethan of refusing to cooperate with Lily’s biological father.
Daniel appeared beside her.
His hand was bandaged where Lily had bitten him.
He described himself as desperate to save his daughter.
Richard used the interview to call for Ethan’s arrest.
The public story became another weapon.
At the convent, agents found fresh tire tracks and a locked basement.
The tactical team entered.

No one was inside.
A tablet remained on a desk.
