Chapter 11 - The Mirror Never Blinked.

Reese pressed play.
The hidden camera's angle was imperfect, but imperfect was enough.
Celeste's hands moved forward.
Evelyn's shoulders jolted backward.
Her right foot lost the edge of the landing.
Lillian reached out too late.
Then Evelyn disappeared from the reflected frame.
The recording had no dramatic music and no perfect close-up.
That made it more devastating.
It looked ordinary.
One angry movement.
One terrible consequence.
One second that Celeste had spent a full day trying to rewrite.
Reese stopped the video.
Celeste remained standing near the library door.
Her face had gone completely still.
Daniel looked away first.
Lillian did not.
The older woman stared at Celeste with the exhausted grief of someone finally seeing the cost of every excuse she had made.
"You pushed her," Lillian said.
Celeste swallowed.
"I touched her."
"You pushed her."
"I did not mean for her to fall."
Reese raised one hand.
"You asked for an attorney, so I am not going to question you."
Celeste ignored him.
Her eyes remained on Lillian.
"You know me."
Lillian's answer came slowly.
"I thought I did."
Celeste's composure finally broke.
"She was baiting me."
Evelyn spoke from the sofa.
"I asked you about messages you sent."
"You knew Reese was listening."
"Yes."
"You wanted a reaction."
"I wanted the truth."
Celeste laughed sharply.
"There is no difference when someone sets a trap."
Evelyn stood with Daniel's help.
"There is a difference between giving someone a chance to tell the truth and forcing them to choose what they do next."
Celeste stared at her.
"You think you're clever because you stayed calm at the bottom of those stairs."
Evelyn's voice softened.
"I stayed calm because I was terrified."
That answer silenced the room.
The sinister smile Celeste had used against her online suddenly meant something else.
It had not been proof that Evelyn felt nothing.
It had been relief that Reese had entered the house when promised.
Reese closed the laptop.
"The video establishes the physical contact clearly enough for us to proceed."
Celeste's attorney had not yet arrived, so Reese said no more about the case.
An officer asked Celeste to remain in the sitting room while paperwork was prepared.
She went without another argument.
As she passed Evelyn, she stopped for half a second.
"This family will blame you when the headlines start."
Evelyn met her eyes.
"Then they will be wrong too."
Celeste walked out.
Daniel exhaled slowly.
"I don't understand how we let this get so far."
Lillian answered before Evelyn could.
"One excuse at a time."
Reese reopened his folder.
"The staircase is only part of this now."
Daniel looked at him.
"The foundation."
"Yes."
Reese explained that Vale's laptop contained copies of forged authorization forms, payment instructions, and drafts of messages designed to make Evelyn appear unstable if she questioned the accounts.
One draft was especially disturbing in its precision.
It described a plan to circulate claims that Evelyn had become paranoid during pregnancy and was accusing staff of entering her room.
Lillian covered her mouth.
Evelyn felt a strange calm settle over her.
The open doors.
The moved photograph.
The anonymous messages.
The camera outage.
They had never been separate acts.
They were parts of a narrative Celeste had been building around her.
"She wanted me discredited before I saw the transfers," Evelyn said.
Reese nodded.
"That is our working theory."
Daniel stared at the files.
"How much money is missing?"
"Possibly more than the accountant first identified."
Lillian sat down.
"Why would she risk everything for money?"
Reese looked at the documents again.
"That may not be the only reason."
He slid one page toward Daniel.
It was an unsigned draft amendment to the Whitmore family trust.
Daniel read the first paragraph.
His face changed.
Evelyn noticed.
"What is it?"
He looked at his mother.
"This changes control of the foundation after the baby is born."
Lillian went pale.
"That draft was never supposed to leave my husband's archive."
Reese looked toward the study.
May you like
The missing file had contained more than signatures.
It had contained a future Celeste believed Evelyn was about to take from her.
