Chapter 3 - The First Lie.

Lillian's personal tablet was found on a side table in the upstairs sitting room.

The device looked harmless beside a porcelain lamp and a stack of gardening magazines.

Reese treated it like the most important object in the mansion.

"Who used this after seven o'clock?" he asked.

Lillian stared at the screen.

"I did during dinner."

"For what?"

"I changed the music in the dining room."

Celeste spoke from the doorway.

"And I checked the weather."

Reese looked at her.

"You forgot that part downstairs."

"You didn't ask me."

Evelyn sat carefully in an armchair while the paramedics finished their assessment.

They recommended that she be examined at a hospital because of the fall, even though she appeared stable.

She agreed immediately.

That simple decision irritated Celeste more than any accusation had.

Celeste wanted Evelyn to look theatrical.

Instead, Evelyn looked methodical.

Reese scrolled through the tablet's recent activity.

The smart-home application had been opened at 7:41 p.m.

The staircase camera had been manually disabled one minute later.

Then the application had been closed.

"I checked the weather before dinner," Celeste said.

Reese raised an eyebrow.

"The device says the weather app was never opened."

Celeste's mouth tightened.

"Maybe I was mistaken."

"That is the first useful thing you've said."

Lillian looked from Reese to Celeste.

"Why would you turn off a staircase camera?"

"I didn't."

"You just admitted you had my tablet."

"Having it isn't the same as doing something with it."

The argument would have continued if Evelyn's phone had not vibrated.

Everyone heard it.

Evelyn looked down.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

YOU WANTED A SHOW.

NOW EVERYONE WILL SEE WHAT YOU REALLY ARE.

Reese crossed the room immediately.

"Do not delete that."

Celeste shook her head.

"This is ridiculous."

Evelyn turned the screen toward her.

"You recognize the wording, don't you?"

"No."

"You used the phrase 'a show' in two messages last week."

Celeste laughed without humor.

"Thousands of people use that word."

Reese asked an officer to photograph the screen.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

"When did the anonymous messages begin?"

"Three weeks ago."

"After what?"

Evelyn hesitated.

The answer would change the entire shape of the evening.

"After Daniel told the family he was changing the Whitmore Foundation's board."

Lillian frowned.

"What does that have to do with you?"

Evelyn met her eyes.

"Daniel planned to give me his proxy while he was traveling."

Celeste's face changed for half a second.

It was not anger this time.

It was fear.

Lillian noticed.

"Celeste?"

"This family foundation has nothing to do with a staircase."

Reese heard the evasion.

"Maybe not."

He looked back at the tablet.

"But people rarely disable cameras for no reason."

The paramedics prepared to take Evelyn for evaluation.

Before she stood, she opened the silent-call recording on her phone.

Reese had already preserved a copy through his department system, but Evelyn wanted Celeste to hear one part.

She tapped play.

Celeste's voice filled the room.

"You should have left when I gave you the chance."

Then Lillian's voice followed.

"Celeste, enough."

Then came the sharp rustle of movement, Lillian's gasp, and Celeste shouting, "No!"

The recording did not show a push.

But it destroyed Celeste's claim that nothing threatening had happened before the fall.

Celeste's face went blank.

"She set me up."

Evelyn slowly rose.

"I documented what you chose to do."

Celeste stepped toward her.

An officer immediately moved between them.

For the first time that night, Celeste looked genuinely trapped.

Then she smiled.

"Fine."

The sudden calm made Reese narrow his eyes.

Celeste reached into her red velvet clutch and removed her own phone.

"If we're sharing recordings, maybe we should share messages too."

She turned the screen toward Lillian.

On it was a text apparently sent from Evelyn's number at 6:58 p.m.

MEET ME AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS AFTER DINNER.

COME ALONE.

Lillian stared at Evelyn.

May you like

Celeste's smile widened.

"Tell them again who planned tonight."
