Chapter 13 - The Last Performance.

The security contractor's name was Owen Mercer.

He was thirty-four, tired-looking, and far less confident than the man who had ignored Reese's calls the day before.

He asked to speak in the dining room because, he said, the library felt like a courtroom.

No one pointed out that the dining room was where the whole evening had begun.

Mercer sat beneath the same crystal chandelier that had cast long shadows over the unfinished dinner.

He kept both hands around a glass of water.

"Celeste said she needed temporary access to recover deleted family footage," he began.

Reese sat across from him.

"And you gave it to her."

"I gave it to Vale."

"Why?"

Mercer looked embarrassed.

"Money."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"How much?"

"Ten thousand."

Lillian closed her eyes.

Mercer continued quickly.

"I thought it was a family dispute."

"I thought Vale was doing private security work."

"I never agreed to hurt anyone."

Reese kept his tone neutral.

"What exactly did you do?"

Mercer explained that he created a service credential that allowed Vale to view archived images and schedule limited camera outages.

He also helped Vale install a diagnostic camera near the upstairs gallery mirror, supposedly to identify who was entering Lillian's study.

The camera that exposed Celeste's push had originally been placed there for Celeste's own surveillance.

The irony was not lost on anyone.

"And the message after the fall?" Reese asked.

Mercer looked confused.

"What message?"

Reese read it aloud.

Mercer shook his head.

"I didn't send that."

"Did Vale?"

"He scheduled messages for her sometimes."

"How?"

"There was an automation app on the prepaid phone."

Evelyn leaned forward.

"So the message could have been written before dinner."

"Yes."

Reese looked at Mercer.

"What was supposed to happen at eight o'clock?"

Mercer hesitated.

"Celeste told Vale she was going to make Evelyn admit she was snooping into foundation accounts."

Daniel frowned.

"That makes no sense."

"It made sense to Celeste," Mercer said.

"She believed if Evelyn got angry on the stairs, Vale could release edited audio later and make her sound unstable."

Evelyn felt cold.

The fall had not been planned as the central event.

The confrontation had.

Celeste expected an argument she could edit.

Instead, she lost control and created the one piece of truth no editing could safely erase.

"Why did the scheduled message say everyone would see what Evelyn really was?" Lillian asked.

Mercer looked at her.

"Because there was supposed to be another video."

Reese's eyes narrowed.

"What video?"

Mercer looked toward Evelyn.

"One made from several clips of you around the house."

"Vale edited them together to make it look like you were secretly searching rooms, checking cameras, and following Celeste."

Evelyn stared at him.

She had checked cameras after realizing her belongings had been moved.

She had entered Lillian's study once with permission to retrieve a foundation binder.

She had followed Celeste down a hallway after hearing her near the nursery.

Each innocent moment could be cut into something darker.

"Where is that video now?" Reese asked.

Mercer swallowed.

"Vale had it."

"We searched his drives."

"Then Celeste has the final copy."

Daniel stood.

"She doesn't have her laptop."

Mercer looked toward the staircase.

"She doesn't need it."

"What do you mean?"

"Vale set up a cloud folder that could publish automatically from any browser."

Reese immediately called his digital unit.

Evelyn looked at the clock.

11:47 a.m.

"Was there a scheduled release time?" she asked.

Mercer hesitated again.

"Noon."

Daniel's phone buzzed.

A family group message had just arrived from Celeste.

It contained only six words.

YOU WANTED THE WHOLE STORY.

HERE.

Below it was a link.

Reese looked at the clock.

11:48.

"Nobody open that yet," he said.

Lillian stared at the chandelier above them.

The same room that had hidden every tension the night before now held every witness who mattered.

Evelyn picked up her own phone.

"Can you stop the upload?"

Reese looked at Mercer.

Mercer nodded uncertainly.

"If we find the folder before noon."

May you like

Twelve minutes remained.

And somewhere inside the mansion, Celeste's final version of the truth was waiting to go public.
