Chapter 5 - The Red Dress Alibi.

By morning, the mansion looked exactly as it always did from the outside.
The stone facade glowed in early sunlight, gardeners trimmed hedges along the drive, and the fountain continued its quiet rhythm as if nothing inside had changed.
Inside, every door felt suspicious.
Daniel arrived at six-fifteen wearing the same dark suit he had left Boston in.
He found Evelyn in the breakfast room with a cup of tea she had not touched.
For several seconds, he simply held her.
Then he stepped back and looked at her face.
"I am sorry."
Evelyn knew he meant more than the fall.
"You can be sorry later."
Daniel nodded.
"Tell me what Reese needs."
Reese was already in the library reviewing the message Celeste claimed Evelyn had sent.
A preliminary check showed something strange.
The message existed on Celeste's phone.
It appeared in the correct conversation thread.
But Evelyn's phone contained no matching outgoing record.
"Could she have deleted it?" Daniel asked.
"Possible," Reese said.
Celeste sat on a sofa across the room, still wearing the red dress under a borrowed black coat.
She had refused to change clothes because, she said, she wanted everyone to see how absurd the accusations were.
"Of course she deleted it," Celeste said.
"She planned the entire thing."
Evelyn looked at her.
"Why would I plan to be pushed down a staircase?"
"Because you knew Reese was outside."
"I knew Reese was listening."
"Exactly."
Celeste leaned forward.
"You wanted me angry."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Being angry doesn't make your hands move on their own."
Celeste looked at him with open resentment.
"You weren't there."
"My mother was."
Everyone turned toward Lillian.
She stood beside the fireplace, pale and exhausted.
"I need more time," she said.
Daniel stared at her.
"More time to remember whether you saw my wife get pushed?"
"Do not speak to me like that."
"Then stop protecting the person who frightened her for weeks."
Celeste rose.
"You have already decided I'm guilty because she is carrying your child."
Daniel did not answer.
The bitterness in her sentence explained more than she intended.
Reese placed Celeste's phone on the table.
"The message metadata was altered."
Celeste froze.
"What does that mean?"
"It means the timestamp displayed in the thread does not match the device's internal database time."
Evelyn leaned forward.
"So it was inserted later?"
"That is one possibility."
Celeste scoffed.
"One possibility."
Reese continued.
"Another is that the phone's clock was manipulated."
"See?"
Celeste looked triumphant again.
"You still don't know."
"Not yet."
Reese picked up a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a small plastic card.
"But we found this behind the desk in Lillian's study."
Celeste's expression changed.
It was an activation sleeve for a prepaid mobile SIM.
The purchase code had been printed on the back.
"That could belong to anyone," Celeste said.
"Correct."
Reese looked at Daniel.
"Which is why I requested store records."
Celeste folded her arms.
"You are wasting your time."
Lillian suddenly spoke.
"Celeste."
Her voice was different now.
"What?"
"Show me your right hand."
Celeste looked confused.
"Why?"
"Show me."
Slowly, Celeste lifted her hand.
A thin red scratch crossed the side of her index finger.
Lillian's eyes filled with recognition.
"The lock on my desk catches if you turn the spare key too quickly."
Celeste lowered her hand.
"I scratched myself on my bracelet."
Lillian stared at her.
"You were not wearing a bracelet last night."
For the first time, Celeste had no answer ready.
Then a phone rang somewhere deep inside the library.
Everyone looked around.
It was not Evelyn's phone.
It was not Daniel's.
It was not Reese's.
The ringing came from inside Celeste's red velvet clutch.
Celeste moved toward it.
Reese got there first.
May you like
He opened the clutch.
Beneath her lipstick and keys sat a second phone no one had seen before.
