Chapter 4 - Eleven Missing Minutes.

The hospital examination lasted less than two hours, but it felt longer to Evelyn because Daniel called seventeen times from the airport.

She answered only after the doctor confirmed that she and the baby appeared stable and ordered several days of rest.

Daniel's face filled the screen, pale with fear.

"I'm on the first flight home."

"Reese says you should stay reachable," Evelyn told him.

"I should have believed you sooner."

That sentence hurt more than she expected.

Two weeks earlier, when Evelyn first showed him the anonymous messages, Daniel had suggested that someone might be playing a stupid prank.

He had not accused her of imagining them.

He had simply failed to understand how frightening it was to feel watched inside your own home.

"We will talk when you get here," she said.

She ended the call before he could apologize again.

Detective Reese waited outside the examination room with a folder of printed system logs.

Lillian had come to the hospital too.

Celeste had remained at the mansion under instruction not to leave until the officers completed their initial interviews.

Lillian sat across from Evelyn without removing her coat.

"That message on Celeste's phone looked like it came from you."

"It didn't."

"How can you be sure?"

"Because I never wrote it."

Lillian rubbed her hands together.

"You did ask her to talk after dinner."

"At the table, in front of you."

"That is not the same thing."

Evelyn stared at her.

"You watched her put both hands on me."

Lillian flinched.

There it was.

The truth she had been avoiding.

"I saw movement," Lillian whispered.

"No."

Evelyn's voice remained quiet.

"You saw what happened, and you were afraid of what telling the truth would do to your family."

Lillian looked toward the floor.

Reese entered before either woman said more.

"We found something."

He placed the logs on a small table.

"The staircase camera was disabled for exactly eleven minutes."

Evelyn looked at the timeline.

7:42 p.m. - manual disable.

7:53 p.m. - automatic restart.

Dinner had ended at 7:49.

The confrontation had happened at approximately 7:51.

"That is too precise," Evelyn said.

"I agree," Reese answered.

Lillian frowned.

"Could Celeste have scheduled it?"

"Not from the normal user screen."

Reese pointed to another line.

"But someone accessed advanced settings."

"With my account?"

"Yes."

Lillian shook her head.

"She does not know my password."

Evelyn looked at her.

"Does she know your recovery code?"

Lillian's expression changed.

The older woman stood too quickly.

"My desk."

"What about it?" Reese asked.

"I keep a written recovery code in the locked drawer of my study."

"Who has a key?"

Lillian did not answer immediately.

She did not need to.

Celeste had lived in the Whitmore mansion for almost a decade after her own mother died.

She had been treated like family, trusted like family, and given access like family.

"Celeste knows where the spare key is," Lillian finally said.

Reese closed the folder.

"Then we need to look at that drawer."

Back at the mansion, the study door was locked.

Lillian opened it herself.

The desk drawer was also locked.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Then Reese noticed a pale scratch beside the brass keyhole.

He photographed it before Lillian inserted her key.

The drawer opened.

The recovery-code card was still there.

Beside it was an envelope that Lillian did not recognize.

She reached for it.

Reese stopped her.

"Let me."

He opened the envelope with gloved hands.

Inside was a printed photograph of Evelyn standing outside her doctor's office.

A second photograph showed Daniel entering the Whitmore Foundation building.

A third showed Lillian unlocking her study.

On the back of the final image, someone had written four words in black ink.

SHE NEVER CHECKS TWICE.

Lillian sank into the desk chair.

Evelyn felt the room shift around her.

May you like

The staircase had not been the beginning.

Someone had been studying all of them.
