A court-appointed videographer set up a camera at the foot of Clara’s hospital bed. Despite her severe injuries, her voice was unwavering. For two hours, she delivered a devastating, ironclad account of the emotional abuse, the financial threats, and the physical assault.

Back at the county jail, Marcus Thorne reviewed the tape on his laptop. He closed the lid and looked at Eleanor through the reinforced glass of the visitation booth.

"The tape is damning, Eleanor. Combined with Davies and the hitman, this is completely unwinnable," Thorne stated bluntly. "I am advising you to take a plea deal. We might get it reduced to second-degree."

Eleanor scoffed, her ego blinding her to reality. "A plea is an admission of defeat. I am an absolute pillar of this city. Take it to trial, Marcus. Win."
