Chapter 10 - The Midnight Infiltration.

We didn't go back to our apartment.
I knew that if they could make a grown man disappear from a courthouse, our flimsy front door wouldn't stop them.
Instead, we waited until midnight and drove my mother's beat-up sedan to the industrial district on the edge of the city.
Crestwood Preparatory maintained a private, off-site storage warehouse where they received their bulk shipments.
"Ava, this is trespassing," my mother whispered, her hands shaking on the steering wheel.
"It's only trespassing if we don't find the poison," I whispered back, slipping out of the car into the shadows.
The warehouse was surrounded by a chain-link fence, but there was a gap near the drainage ditch that I had spotted on satellite maps weeks ago.
I squeezed through the rusted wire, signaling for my mother to follow.
The building was massive, silent, and cloaked in darkness.
I used a heavy rock to smash the glass of a side fire door, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the quiet night.
We slipped inside, my mother clicking on a small, weak flashlight.

Towering rows of cardboard boxes loomed over us like skyscrapers in a dead city.
We had to find the restricted batch before morning.
