Chapter 12 - The Escape.

I didn't think; I just reacted.
I grabbed a heavy, frozen can of industrial soup from a nearby open crate and hurled it with all my might.
It struck the gunman squarely in the face, sending him stumbling backward with a shout of pain.
"Run!" I screamed, grabbing my mother's hand.
We sprinted down the narrow aisle as the sound of a suppressed gunshot shattered a wooden pallet right next to my head.
We darted left, then right, weaving through the maze of towering inventory.
The men were shouting, their heavy boots pounding against the concrete floor behind us.
I saw the red glow of the emergency exit sign at the far end of the building.
"Almost there!" my mother yelled, pulling me forward.
We crashed through the fire doors and tumbled out into the cool night air.
We scrambled through the gap in the fence just as the warehouse doors burst open behind us.
My mother threw the car into drive before my door was even closed, the tires squealing in protest as we sped away into the darkness.
