Chapter 2 - The Weapon in Child’s Hand.

Latham stood up with an exasperated sigh.

“Your Honor, this is a mockery of the legal process. The plaintiff is clearly using her child as a publicity stunt.”

Judge Vance looked at me.

“Young lady, I will have to ask you to sit down. This matter requires a licensed attorney.”

I didn't blink.

“Why?” I asked, holding the judge’s gaze.

“The law is about rules and evidence, right?”

I reached down and picked up the battered cardboard folder.

It was covered in faded marker hearts and childish stickers of unicorns.

It looked completely worthless, like something that had been lost at the bottom of a backpack for months.

“Inside this folder,” I said, raising it slightly, “are all the reasons why Crestwood Preparatory doesn't get to win.”

Headmaster Hale let out a small, sharp chuckle.

Richard Latham just gestured impatiently to the judge.

I walked around the table, the old folder tucked under my arm, and started moving toward the defense table.

Latham tensed, not expecting me to actually approach them.

I stopped right in front of them, looking up at the two powerful men who thought they could erase my mother.

I placed the folder on their expansive mahogany table.

The noise of its impact was barely audible, but it felt like a bomb dropping.

Every smile in the room slowly began to disappear.
