THE LUNCH THEY THREW AWAY / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Video They Wanted Everyone to See.

By the next morning, Daniel was on administrative leave.

By lunchtime, the photograph from the cafeteria had become a video.

Someone posted a twelve-second clip online showing Daniel striding toward a group of uniformed children with a hard expression, then turning sharply toward Mrs. Bell.

The clip ended before he hugged Emma.

It contained no image of the ruined sandwich.

No image of Emma crying.

No image of Chloe.

A caption claimed an enraged parent had stormed a private school cafeteria and intimidated elementary students.

Within hours, local television stations began requesting comment.

Daniel watched the clip once.

Then Leah made him turn off his phone.

“They are forcing you into a public reaction.”

“They already made it public.”

“They made their version public.”

Daniel paced her office.

“Then release ours.”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if we dump everything online, they will call it manipulated, stolen, edited, or incomplete.”

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“They are doing exactly that.”

“And they want you angry enough to respond recklessly.”

Daniel stopped.

He knew she was right.

That made it worse.

At three in the afternoon, Emma’s class teacher, Ms. Patel, called from a private number.

Her voice shook.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

Daniel sat down.

“Then speak now.”

Ms. Patel explained that teachers had received an internal directive two months earlier.

Staff were told to document any “behavioral instability” involving Emma and any “aggressive parental communications” involving Daniel.

Daniel felt his skin go cold.

“Two months ago?”

“Yes.”

The sandwich incident had not happened yet.

“Who sent the directive?”

“Dr. Reeves.”

“Do you have it?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Send it to Leah.”

Ms. Patel started crying quietly.

“I watched them isolate her.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I told myself I was protecting my job.”

“You were protecting your job.”

The words came out harder than he intended.

Ms. Patel accepted them.

“I know.”

Then she said something unexpected.

“Chloe came to me after the cafeteria incident.”

Daniel looked up.

“What did she say?”

“She asked if people go to jail for making someone cry.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What did you tell her?”

“I told her children make mistakes and adults are supposed to help them fix those mistakes.”

“What happened?”

“Her mother came into my classroom ten minutes later and took her out.”

Ms. Patel lowered her voice.

“Chloe has not returned to school since.”

Daniel had assumed the girl was attending classes.

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

That evening, Victoria’s attorney issued a statement saying Chloe was being kept home due to harassment caused by Daniel’s campaign against the school.

Daniel nearly threw the phone across the room.

Emma was sitting beside him on the sofa.

She looked at the statement and frowned.

“Chloe didn’t want me to leave.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“What?”

“The day before the sandwich.”

“She told me her mom was making her do something bad.”

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Emma looked ashamed.

“She made me promise.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

Then the doorbell rang.

It was after nine.

Leah had warned him not to open the door to reporters.

Daniel checked the camera on his phone.

A small figure stood alone on the porch.

Blonde hair.

Navy cardigan.

Chloe Whitmore.

Daniel opened the door.

Chloe was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

She held a white envelope in both hands.

“My mom is going to say Emma made everything up.”

Daniel crouched several feet away.

“Where is your mother?”

Chloe looked over her shoulder at the dark street.

Then she handed him the envelope.

“She doesn’t know I took this.”
