THE LUNCH THEY THREW AWAY / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Missing Twenty Minutes.

Daniel read the note three times in his truck before showing it to Emma.

She recognized the handwriting.

“That’s Ms. Martinez.”

Rosa Martinez had worked at Wycliffe Academy for more than a decade.

She cleaned classrooms, repaired broken locker doors, and somehow remembered every child’s birthday.

Daniel had spoken with her twice during school events.

She had always seemed kind to Emma.

He called the school immediately and asked to speak with her.

The receptionist put him on hold for six minutes.

Then she returned with a rehearsed answer.

“Ms. Martinez is unavailable.”

“When will she be available?”

“I don’t have that information.”

Daniel looked through the windshield at the stone school building.

“Tell Dr. Reeves I am requesting preservation of all security footage from eleven thirty to one thirty today.”

“I can take a message.”

“Take the exact message.”

He ended the call.

Emma sat quietly beside him.

Daniel hated how small she looked in the passenger seat.

“Did this happen before today?”

Emma stared at her backpack.

“Sometimes.”

“What does sometimes mean?”

She rubbed her thumb against the edge of her cardigan.

“Chloe hides my stuff.”

“Madison says I smell like thrift stores.”

“Ben makes barking sounds when I eat.”

Daniel closed his eyes for a second.

He had bought that cardigan new.

Emma had begged him not to replace it after the button was torn because she said she liked the old one.

Now he understood.

“Did teachers see?”

“Sometimes.”

“And what did they do?”

Emma’s answer was almost inaudible.

“They tell me not to react.”

Daniel’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.

At home, he photographed the red mark on her wrist and saved copies of every email he had sent the school.

He also contacted an attorney named Leah Morgan, a former college friend who specialized in education law.

Leah called him within an hour.

“Do not go back onto campus without written permission.”

“They have not banned me.”

“They are building a file to do exactly that.”

Daniel looked toward the kitchen, where Emma sat at the table drawing silently.

“Can they erase footage?”

“They can try.”

“Send a preservation demand now.”

Leah did.

At four seventeen that afternoon, Wycliffe responded.

The school claimed that the cafeteria camera suffered a server synchronization error between 12:06 p.m. and 12:26 p.m.

Emma’s lunch period began at 12:10.

Daniel stared at the twenty-minute gap.

Then his phone rang from an unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then a woman whispered.

“Mr. Hart?”

“Yes.”

“It’s Rosa Martinez.”

Daniel stood and walked away from Emma.

“Are you safe?”

“For now.”

“What did you mean about the camera?”

Rosa breathed shakily.

“The camera was working.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I watched the footage.”

Daniel’s pulse accelerated.

“What did you see?”

Rosa hesitated.

“The sandwich.”

“Chloe.”

“Mrs. Bell.”

“And someone else.”

“Who?”

Rosa lowered her voice.

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

Daniel went still.

Victoria had claimed she was not on campus until after the incident.

“What was she doing in the cafeteria?”

“I don’t know, but she spoke to Chloe before Emma came in.”

“Do you have the video?”

Another pause.

“I copied part of it.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Part?”

“Before the server administrator came downstairs and told me to leave.”

“Who is the administrator?”

Rosa did not answer.

A door slammed on her end of the call.

Then a man’s voice said something Daniel could not understand.

Rosa whispered quickly.

“They know I called you.”

The line went dead.

Daniel called back.

The number was disconnected.

Five minutes later, an email arrived from Wycliffe Academy.

It stated that Rosa Martinez had resigned effective immediately.
