THE LUNCH THEY THREW AWAY / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Archive That Survived.

The police sealed the foundation records room.

By afternoon, local news had learned that investigators were examining financial records tied to Wycliffe Academy.

The school could no longer describe the dispute as a playground misunderstanding.

Victoria hired a criminal defense attorney.

Dr. Reeves remained unreachable.

Daniel spent that evening sitting with Emma at their kitchen table while she built a castle from cereal boxes.

He wanted one ordinary hour.

Emma gave him twelve minutes.

Then she asked the question he had been avoiding.

“Did Mom know they were stealing?”

Daniel looked at the photograph of Rachel on the refrigerator.

“Yes.”

“Is that why Chloe’s mom hates us?”

“Partly.”

“Did Mom get hurt because of it?”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“We do not have evidence of that.”

Emma studied his face.

“You always say evidence when you’re scared.”

Daniel almost smiled.

She knew him too well.

The next morning, Leah received a call from Henry Sloan.

He had remembered something Rachel told him before her death.

She never trusted the foundation archive as the only backup.

Rachel had used a donor reporting system that automatically sent quarterly summaries to an outside accounting firm.

The firm still existed.

By noon, a subpoena request was underway.

By late afternoon, the firm voluntarily confirmed it retained historical copies.

The archive had survived without anyone at Wycliffe knowing.

The records were devastating.

They showed five years of transfers from restricted scholarships into administrative accounts.

They showed payments to Reeves Educational Strategy LLC.

They showed reimbursements approved by Victoria after Rachel objected.

They showed manipulated board reports that concealed the transfers from donors.

Most damaging of all, they showed a set of electronic approval logs.

Three transactions carried Rachel Hart’s name.

The metadata proved her credentials had been used after she had already reported them compromised.

Rachel had not approved the transfers.

Someone had forged her authorization.

Leah called Daniel into her office that evening.

“There is one more document.”

She placed a printed email on the table.

It was from Rachel to Dr. Reeves, dated eight days before her death.

I have retained independent copies of all disputed transactions and will present them to the trustees if these funds are not restored.

Reeves had replied ten minutes later.

You are making a mistake that will affect more than you.

Daniel read the sentence repeatedly.

Leah spoke carefully.

“This is a threat in context, but it is not proof he caused her accident.”

“I know.”

“We keep those issues separate.”

“I know.”

Daniel folded the paper with shaking hands.

Then Sergeant Nolan called.

Police had located Dr. Reeves.

He was at a hotel near the airport.

He had not fled the country.

He had been preparing to.

Investigators found two laptops, financial records, and more than sixty thousand dollars in cashier’s checks in his room.

He was taken into custody for questioning related to financial crimes and destruction of records.

Daniel expected relief.

Instead, he felt exhausted.

Then Nolan added something unexpected.

“Reeves wants to talk about Victoria Whitmore.”

Daniel looked at Leah.

“Why?”

“He says she ordered the pressure campaign against Emma.”

“That part we know.”

Nolan paused.

“He also says Victoria threatened him if he refused.”

Daniel frowned.

“Threatened him with what?”

“Evidence connecting him to Rachel’s forged approvals.”

The criminals had been blackmailing each other.

But Reeves had one more claim.

He said Victoria possessed the only complete recording of the board meeting where Rachel first confronted them.

According to Reeves, Victoria had kept it as insurance.

And according to phone records obtained that afternoon, Victoria had just entered Wycliffe Academy through a side entrance after the building closed.

Emma looked at Daniel from across Leah’s office.

“Is Chloe with her?”

No one knew.
