THE LUNCH THEY THREW AWAY / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - What Emma Would Not Say.

Dr. Malcolm Reeves kept his office colder than the rest of Wycliffe Academy.

Daniel noticed it the moment he entered with Emma beside him.

The room smelled of polished wood and expensive coffee, and every framed photograph on the wall showed smiling donors shaking hands with the principal.

Victoria Whitmore appeared in six of them.

Dr. Reeves rose from behind his desk with the careful expression of a man preparing to manage a problem rather than solve one.

“Mr. Hart, thank you for coming.”

“I was already here.”

Daniel did not sit.

Emma stood close to his leg.

Dr. Reeves glanced at her and softened his voice.

“Emma, would you like to wait outside with Ms. Greene?”

“No.”

Her answer came faster than Daniel expected.

Dr. Reeves blinked.

Daniel placed a hand on her shoulder.

“She stays.”

The principal folded his hands.

“I understand emotions are high, but we have to be careful about accusations between children.”

Daniel pulled his phone from his pocket and placed it on the desk.

He had photographed the writing on the sandwich paper before leaving the cafeteria.

“Is that an accusation?”

Dr. Reeves barely looked at the screen.

“Children can be unkind without understanding the weight of their words.”

“Who wrote it?”

“We don’t know.”

“Emma does.”

The principal looked at her.

Emma’s fingers tightened around Daniel’s hand.

“Chloe wrote it.”

Dr. Reeves exhaled slowly.

“Did you see her write it?”

Emma’s eyes dropped.

“No.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Sweetheart, tell me what happened from the beginning.”

Emma stayed silent so long that the ticking wall clock became unbearable.

Finally she spoke.

“Chloe took my lunch.”

“She said I only got into Wycliffe because people felt sorry for me.”

“She asked everybody if they wanted to watch a charity lunch get recycled.”

Daniel felt heat rise behind his eyes.

Emma continued.

“She threw it down.”

“Then she told Madison to step on it.”

Dr. Reeves leaned forward.

“Emma, are you certain Madison actually stepped on it because Chloe told her to?”

Emma looked confused.

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at the principal.

“That is your question?”

“I am trying to establish facts.”

“Then establish why my daughter was sitting on the floor crying while your staff watched.”

Dr. Reeves’s expression hardened by a fraction.

“Mrs. Bell reports that Emma became upset after a disagreement.”

“A disagreement?”

Daniel’s voice remained low.

“Her lunch was destroyed and she was called trash.”

Emma suddenly pulled on his hand.

“Dad, don’t.”

Daniel looked down.

Her face had changed from sadness to fear.

“Why not?”

Emma glanced toward Dr. Reeves.

The principal noticed.

Daniel noticed that he noticed.

He crouched beside her.

“Emma, what are you afraid of?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing.”

Daniel waited.

Tears returned to her eyes.

Then she whispered.

“They said if I told you again, you’d get banned from school.”

Daniel slowly stood.

Dr. Reeves’s face lost color.

“Who said that?”

Emma looked toward the closed office door.

“Mrs. Bell.”

The principal rose quickly.

“That is a serious claim.”

Emma flinched at the sharpness in his voice.

Daniel moved between them without thinking.

Dr. Reeves stopped.

“You do not raise your voice at her.”

“I was not raising my voice.”

“You were.”

Silence settled over the office.

Then someone knocked.

The door opened before Dr. Reeves answered.

A woman in a cream-colored suit stepped inside.

Daniel recognized Victoria Whitmore immediately.

She was elegant, composed, and smiling as though she had arrived for a charity luncheon.

Chloe stood behind her.

Victoria looked at Emma, then at Daniel.

“I heard there was an unfortunate little incident.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Victoria’s smile remained.

“Perhaps we can resolve this before anyone damages the school’s reputation.”

Daniel looked at Chloe.

The little girl’s eyes were red now.

Then Chloe looked at Emma and mouthed two silent words.

I’m sorry.

Victoria noticed and placed a hand on her daughter’s shoulder.

Her fingers tightened.

Chloe immediately looked down.

May you like

Daniel saw the gesture.

And in that moment, he realized the bully in the cafeteria might not be the person he needed to fear most.
