Chapter 14 - The Night the School Went Dark.
Daniel did not go to Wycliffe when police learned Victoria had entered the building after closing.
Every part of him wanted to.
Leah made him wait at the police station.
“If you charge into that school now, you become the picture they have been painting.”
Daniel hated the logic because it was correct.
At 8:26 p.m., Sergeant Nolan called.
Victoria had been found in the administration wing.
Chloe was with her and physically safe.
Victoria claimed she had returned to collect personal files before the board revoked her access.
Officers found a flash drive in her purse.
Chloe refused to leave with her mother and asked to speak with a child advocate.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Emma sat beside him holding two sandwiches she had packed herself.
“One was for Chloe.”
Daniel put an arm around her.
“You can give it to her when the adults make that safe.”
Two days later, Wycliffe held an emergency public board session.
Parents packed the auditorium and reporters filled the back row.
Daniel sat beside Emma and Leah near the aisle.
For the first time since the cafeteria incident, nobody tried to move them.
The acting board chair apologized for failures in student safety and financial oversight.
Then Rosa Martinez entered through a side door.
Emma jumped up.
“Ms. Martinez!”
Rosa hugged her.
Daniel learned Rosa had never resigned.
The school had announced her resignation after placing her on involuntary leave.
She had spent the following days cooperating with investigators.
The board attorney announced that a recording recovered from Victoria’s flash drive would be played.
The auditorium went silent.
Rachel’s voice filled the room.
Daniel had not heard it unexpectedly in years.
“These accounts belong to children.”
Dr. Reeves answered from the recording.
“The money has been used for school purposes.”
“Donors restricted it for scholarships.”
Victoria’s voice followed.
“You are being dramatic.”
Rachel replied immediately.
“No, I am being precise.”
Daniel lowered his head for a moment.
That was Rachel exactly.
The recording continued as she accused Reeves of routing funds through his consulting company and Victoria of approving false reports.
Then Reeves said something that froze the room.
“Your daughter benefits from this institution, Rachel.”
Rachel answered without hesitation.
“Then she deserves an institution worth benefiting from.”
The recording ended.
Emma was crying silently.
Across the aisle, Chloe cried beside her advocate.
The acting chair announced that investigators had confirmed widespread misuse of scholarship funds.
Reeves had been removed.
Victoria had resigned from the board.
Mrs. Bell had been suspended pending investigation into student mistreatment and evidence suppression.
The scholarship accounts would face an independent audit.
A reporter stood.
“Mr. Hart, will your daughter return to Wycliffe?”
Every camera turned toward Daniel.
Emma tugged his sleeve.
“I want to answer.”
Daniel nodded.
Emma stood on the auditorium seat so people could see her.
“I don’t know if I’m coming back.”
She looked across the room at Chloe.
“But if I do, nobody gets to make kids eat by the trash anymore.”
The room fell silent.
“And nobody gets to tell a kid their dad is bad because he came when they were crying.”
Daniel looked down as his eyes filled.
Then Chloe suddenly stood.
“I did it.”
People turned toward her.
“I ruined Emma’s lunch.”
“My mom told me to be mean, but I still did it.”
She looked directly at Emma.
“That part is mine.”
Emma did not smile.
She simply nodded.
Then Chloe said one more thing.
