## CHAPTER 11 — THE HIDDEN BENEFICIARY
Harrison brought Khloe to a private bank outside the city.
The institution appeared ordinary, but Mara’s documents identified it as one of the original financial partners of the Family Protection Initiative.
They requested information about the trust linked to Khloe’s childhood identification number.
The bank manager disappeared into a secure office for nearly an hour.
When she returned, two attorneys accompanied her.
“Ms. Cole,” she said carefully, “the account you’re asking about is protected by a judicial confidentiality order.”
“I am the beneficiary.”
“We cannot confirm that.”
Harrison placed a court petition on the desk.
“Then deny us formally, and I’ll have your entire executive board answering questions under oath by Friday.”
One of the bank’s attorneys read the first page.
“This order is sealed.”
“I obtained limited judicial access this morning.”
“From which judge?”
“Judge Adrian Vale.”
The attorneys exchanged a glance.
Khloe noticed it.
“You know him.”
The manager folded her hands.
“Judge Vale has supervised certain legacy accounts for many years.”
“Open the file,” Harrison said.
The manager entered a code.
Khloe’s name appeared on the screen.
Beneath it was another name.
Nora Elise Cole — Successor Beneficiary.
The current account balance was $487,214,602.
Khloe stared at the number.
“This can’t be mine.”
“It was created after the death of a man named Samuel Harrington,” the manager explained.
Khloe recognized the surname.
It belonged to Evan’s family.
“Why would a Harrington leave money to me?”
The manager opened a scanned birth record.
Samuel Harrington had one daughter who disappeared as a teenager.
Her name was Margaret.
Khloe looked at Harrison.
Their grandmother’s name had been Margaret.
Harrison understood first.
“Samuel Harrington was Mom’s biological father.”
The manager nodded.
“When Margaret died, the inheritance should have passed to her daughter, Elise, and then to Elise’s children.”
“But it was hidden,” Khloe said.
“Through a disputed guardianship order.”
Harrison examined the judge’s signature.
Daniel Cole.
Again.
He checked the date.
The order had been entered one week before his father’s supposed death.
“This signature might be real,” Harrison said.
Khloe turned toward him.
“Are you saying Dad helped steal Mom’s inheritance?”
“I’m saying someone wants it to look that way.”
A security alarm suddenly sounded.
The bank manager stood.
“That alarm is only used for a breach inside the records vault.”
The screen went dark.
Every account document disappeared.
Harrison rushed into the hallway.
Smoke poured from a stairwell near the vault.
Bank employees evacuated while security guards attempted to contain the fire.
Khloe held tightly to Nora.
A man wearing a maintenance uniform moved against the crowd.
He passed close enough to whisper into Khloe’s ear.
“Your brother will destroy you to learn the truth.”
Khloe turned.
The man entered the smoke.
Harrison ran after him but found only an abandoned uniform near a service exit.
Inside one pocket was an envelope.
It contained a certified copy of Harrison’s birth certificate.
The parents listed were not Daniel and Elise Cole.
His mother was listed as unknown.
His father was listed as Adrian Vale.
