## CHAPTER 9 — NOTHING WAS STOLEN

Khloe knew someone had entered her home before she opened the front door.

The porch light was on.

She always turned it off before leaving.

Her mother, Elise, was carrying Nora’s diaper bag.

“Stay behind me,” Khloe whispered.

She called Harrison while checking the security application on her phone.

Every indoor camera had gone offline for exactly six minutes.

Harrison answered immediately.

“Don’t enter the house.”

“I think someone’s inside.”

“Get back in the car.”

Khloe stepped away from the door.

A toy began playing inside Nora’s nursery.

The melody drifted through the walls.

It was a wind-up music box.

It could not activate by itself.

Khloe returned to the car and locked the doors.

Harrison arrived with Leo twelve minutes later. Police searched every room but found no intruder.

Nothing appeared to be missing.

Nora’s jewelry remained in its box.

Khloe’s emergency cash was untouched.

The computer was still on the desk.

Then Harrison entered the nursery.

The room was perfectly organized.

Too perfectly.

Every stuffed animal had been placed in a straight line facing the crib.

The music box rested on the pillow.

Inside the crib was a photograph.

It showed Khloe and Harrison as children standing beside their father.

Someone had cut Harrison out of the picture.

On the back was a handwritten date.

October 14.

Three days away.

Khloe stood in the doorway.

“What happens on October fourteenth?”

Harrison did not answer.

It was the anniversary of their father’s death.

Elise entered behind Khloe and saw the photograph.

Her face lost all color.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was in Nora’s crib,” Khloe said.

Elise reached for it, but Harrison pulled it away.

“Mother, is Dad alive?”

Silence filled the room.

Khloe stared at her.

“What is he talking about?”

Elise lowered herself into a chair.

“I identified the body.”

“That isn’t what I asked,” Harrison said.

“The police told me it was Daniel.”

“Did you see his face?”

“The car burned.”

“Did you see his face?”

“No.”

Khloe covered her mouth.

Harrison placed the brass key and cassette recorder on the dresser.

“I heard his voice tonight.”

Elise closed her eyes.

“He promised that recording would never be found.”

Harrison moved closer.

“You knew?”

“I knew he was alive for six months after the accident.”

Khloe stepped backward as if struck.

“You let us believe our father was dead?”

“He was trying to protect you.”

“From whom?”

Elise looked toward Nora.

“From the people who controlled the Family Protection Initiative.”

Harrison demanded every detail.

Elise explained that Daniel had discovered judges, doctors, attorneys, and private guardians manipulating sealed cases. When he threatened to expose them, the network staged his death.

He disappeared while gathering evidence.

Six months later, Elise received a final letter.

Daniel wrote that someone inside their family had betrayed him.

After that, there had been no contact.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Khloe asked.

“Because the letter said they would take my children if I spoke.”

Harrison’s voice became colder.

“Did he name the person who betrayed him?”

“No.”

Elise looked at the childhood photograph.

“But he included a warning.”

“What warning?” Harrison asked.

“He said the records of one child had already been changed.”

Nora began crying.

Khloe lifted her from the crib.

Harrison looked at his mother.

“Whose records?”

Elise’s eyes filled with tears.

May you like

“Yours.”
