## CHAPTER 17 — THE JUDGE’S CONFESSION

Judge Vale ordered Harrison to step away from Mara.
“You’re making a mistake,” Harrison said.
“I made my first mistake forty years ago.”
Vale locked the courtroom doors.
He admitted that he had helped create the legal structure behind the Family Protection Initiative.
At first, the program had been designed to protect children whose wealthy parents were involved in organized crime.
Then private guardians realized they could control the children’s assets.
Judges began selling sealed orders.
Doctors falsified deaths.
Attorneys arranged adoptions.
Vale claimed he had tried to stop the corruption after his infant son disappeared.
“Daniel promised to help me find him,” Vale said.
“And instead, you framed Daniel’s death.”
“I helped him disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because the network wanted him dead.”
“Is he Nora’s biological father?”
Vale lowered his weapon slightly.
“I don’t know. Dr. Shaw protected the genetic records.”
Harrison glanced toward Mara.
She was bleeding from a wound near her temple.
“She needs medical attention.”
“No one leaves until I recover the archive.”
“You don’t have it?”
“Daniel stole it.”
“Then why threaten me?”
“Because he will reveal himself to save you.”
Harrison finally understood.
The threats against Khloe, Nora, and himself were not only about the inheritance.
Vale was using them to draw Daniel out of hiding.
“You allowed Judith to attack Khloe.”
“I didn’t know she would push her.”
“But you knew there was a plan.”
Vale’s silence answered him.
Harrison moved closer.
“My sister nearly died because you wanted to find one man.”
“Daniel has evidence that could imprison hundreds of people.”
“So you sacrificed Khloe.”
“I believed emergency personnel would intervene.”
“She was pregnant!”
“I know.”
Harrison attacked him.
The gun fell beneath the witness stand.
They struggled until a side door burst open.
Dana and Leo entered with courthouse officers.
Vale raised his hands.
For several seconds, it appeared the crisis was over.
Then the courtroom lights went out.
A single gunshot echoed.
When the emergency lights activated, Vale was lying on the floor.
A bullet had struck his chest.
Harrison stood above him holding the weapon.
“I didn’t fire,” Harrison said.
Dana looked toward the officers.
Every body camera was recording.
Vale struggled to speak.
Harrison knelt beside him.
“Who shot you?”
Vale gripped Harrison’s jacket.
“Your father.”
Then his hand fell.
A courthouse officer took the gun from Harrison.
“You’re under arrest.”
Dana stepped between them.
“He didn’t do this.”
“The weapon is in his hand.”
“The lights were out.”
The officers restrained Harrison.
Leo searched for Mara.
She had disappeared.
Security footage showed Harrison entering the courtroom alone.
There was no image of Dr. Shaw, Rourke, Mara, Dana, or Leo.
Only Harrison.
The electronic record made it appear that he had entered, argued with Vale, and shot him.
As Harrison was led toward the courthouse entrance, reporters were already waiting.
Someone had alerted them before the gunshot occurred.
Across the street, Dr. Shaw watched from inside a black sedan.
She made a call.
“Harrison has been contained.”
A man answered.
“And the child?”
“Still with Khloe.”

“Then begin the final transfer.”
