## CHAPTER 20 — THE FIRST CHILD

The archive drive contained thousands of sealed records.
Most were encrypted.
Only one folder opened without a password.
Its title was:
THE FIRST CHILD.
Inside were three video files.
Harrison played the oldest.
Daniel appeared twenty-four years younger, sitting inside the hidden courthouse archive.
“I have learned the truth about Subject Twelve,” he said.
Harrison leaned closer to the screen.
“Subject Twelve was not randomly selected. His birth was planned.”
The video distorted.
Daniel continued.
“The Initiative needed a child who could legally inherit the Harrington trust, access the Vale court network, and carry the genetic authorization created through Subject Zero.”
Khloe held Nora while listening.
Daniel looked directly into the old camera.
“Harrison, you were created to control the system they built.”
The second video had been recorded one year before Khloe’s courthouse attack.
Daniel stood beside Mara Ellis.
“The network has begun searching for the next child,” he said. “They believe Harrison cannot be controlled, so they intend to create a successor.”
Mara handed him a medical file.
Khloe recognized her own name.
Daniel’s face filled with horror.
“The embryo has already been transferred.”
Khloe looked down at Nora.
The third video had been recorded only hours earlier.
Daniel appeared inside a moving vehicle.
“They have taken me again, but they still do not understand the archive.”
He raised a small device.
“The files on the courthouse drive are a decoy. The real archive is encoded inside a living genetic sequence.”
Harrison and Khloe exchanged a look.
Daniel continued.
“The sequence was divided between two children.”
“Me and Nora,” Harrison whispered.
But Daniel shook his head as if answering him across time.
“Not Harrison and Nora.”
The vehicle around Daniel suddenly stopped.
Voices shouted outside.
He spoke faster.
“Harrison carries the access sequence, but Nora is not the second child.”
Khloe’s arms tightened around her daughter.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“The second child was born on the same night as Nora.”
The image flickered.
“Khloe, the hospital told you only one baby survived.”
Khloe stopped breathing.
She remembered waking after an emergency delivery.
Evan had told her there had been complications.
Doctors had kept Nora in another room for several hours.
“What is he saying?” she whispered.
Daniel continued.
“You gave birth to twins.”
The screen went black.
A courthouse alarm began ringing.
Dana rushed into the room.
“We have a breach at the federal residence.”
Khloe stood.
“Nora was there with agents.”
“They found the agents unconscious.”
Khloe looked down.
She was still holding Nora.
“Then what did they take?”
Dana showed them the security image.
Dr. Shaw was leaving the residence carrying an infant wrapped in a blue blanket.
The recording timestamp was current.
The child appeared to be the same age as Nora.
Harrison opened the final document in the folder.
It was a birth record containing two names.
Nora Elise Cole.
And another child:
Naomi Daniel Cole.
Status:
TRANSFERRED AT BIRTH.
An incoming video call appeared on Khloe’s phone.
She answered.
Dr. Shaw stood inside an unfamiliar nursery.
Behind her, a little girl with Khloe’s eyes was sleeping in a crib.
“You kept one daughter,” Dr. Shaw said.
“We kept the other.”
“Where is she?” Khloe demanded.
“Come alone, and perhaps you’ll finally meet her.”
The camera moved toward the sleeping child.
Around the girl’s neck was half of a silver pendant.
Harrison removed the pendant Daniel had hidden inside the archive drive.
It was the matching half.
Dr. Shaw smiled.
“The first child has been activated.”
The call ended.
At that exact moment, every courthouse computer changed to the same message:
SUBJECT TWELVE MUST CHOOSE.
Below it were two live video feeds.
One showed Daniel chained inside a concrete room.
The other showed the missing child being carried toward an operating table.
A sixty-minute countdown appeared between them.
Harrison reached for the archive drive.
Khloe stopped him.
“What happens when the timer reaches zero?”
A new sentence appeared across the screen.
