## CHAPTER 12 — THE JUDGE’S SON

Judge Adrian Vale agreed to meet Harrison after midnight.
The meeting took place inside his private chambers, away from clerks, cameras, and courthouse staff.
Vale was seventy-two years old, with silver hair and the calm voice of a man accustomed to being obeyed.
Harrison placed the birth certificate on his desk.
“Is this real?”
Vale examined it without surprise.
“No.”
“You answered too quickly.”
“Because I have seen it before.”
“Where?”
“In a sealed file your father brought to me twenty-three years ago.”
Harrison remained standing.
“Daniel Cole was my father.”
“Yes.”
“Then why does this list you?”
“To compromise me.”
“By claiming I’m your son?”
Vale removed his glasses.
“The people behind the Family Protection Initiative created false identities whenever they needed leverage. Children became assets. Birth certificates became weapons.”
“Were you part of it?”
“I tried to dismantle it.”
“That is what every powerful man says when his name appears in a criminal file.”
Vale opened a safe and removed a leather journal.
It belonged to Daniel Cole.
Harrison recognized his father’s handwriting.
“Daniel gave this to me the night before the car explosion,” Vale said. “He asked me to protect your family.”
“You waited twenty-three years.”
“I protected you by ensuring the network believed you were irrelevant.”
“Khloe was pushed down these steps.”
“And the people directly responsible were convicted.”
“Not all of them.”
“No.”
Vale admitted that the Archivist had survived every investigation by controlling sealed courthouse systems.
No one knew the Archivist’s identity.
Only that every corrupted guardianship file passed through the same hidden archive.
Harrison opened Daniel’s journal.
Several pages had been removed.
“Where are the missing pages?”
“Your father took them.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
Harrison did not believe him.
Vale reached for the intercom, but the lights went out.
A red emergency lamp illuminated the room.
Someone locked the chamber doors from the outside.
Smoke began entering through the ventilation system.
Vale moved toward a bookcase and pressed a hidden switch.
A narrow passage opened behind the shelves.
“You knew this would happen,” Harrison said.
“I knew they were watching.”
They entered the passage as glass shattered in the chamber.
A masked person climbed through the window.
Harrison and Vale descended a concealed staircase leading beneath the courthouse.
At the bottom stood an old steel elevator.
The access panel displayed one name.
DANIEL COLE.
Harrison remembered Evan’s statement.
“Where does this go?”
“To the archive your father discovered.”
Vale entered a code.
The doors opened.
Inside the elevator, Harrison found a child’s photograph taped to the wall.
It showed a young boy sitting in a hospital bed.
The boy had Harrison’s eyes.
Written beneath the image were four words:
SUBJECT 12 — TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Harrison turned toward Vale.
“What was transferred?”
Vale looked terrified.
“Not what.”
The elevator began descending.
May you like
“Who.”
