Chapter 2 - The Shattered Facade

The recording's echo faded into the high ceilings of the foyer.

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Evelyn’s face completely drained of color.

The elegant red gown she wore suddenly looked like a glaring warning sign.

"Victor, that... that is a fabrication," Evelyn stammered.

She took a desperate, frantic step toward her husband.

"She faked it! You know what these apps can do now!"

Victor did not blink.

His eyes remained fixed on the woman he had married just a year ago.

This was the woman he had trusted to care for his only child.

"Play it again," Victor demanded.

His voice was frighteningly calm.

"Victor, please! She is trying to destroy our family!" Evelyn pleaded.

Clara did not wait for Evelyn to finish her lies.

She pressed the glowing triangle on her screen once more.

"Victor's child... must disappear."

The cruel, calculating tone was undeniably Evelyn's.

It was the exact voice she used when she thought no one else was listening.

Victor slowly turned his gaze away from his wife and looked at Clara.

He looked at the young maid, and then down at his son.

Leo was still weeping quietly, burying his face deep into Clara’s apron.

The boy was absolutely terrified of the woman who was supposed to be his mother.

The realization hit Victor like a physical blow to the chest.

"Where did you get this recording, Clara?" Victor asked.

His tone was no longer accusatory; it was desperate for the absolute truth.

"She was in the study this morning," Clara answered steadily.

"She was on the phone with a man."

"She told him Leo was in the way of her inheritance."

"I heard her through the cracked door, and I hit record."

Evelyn let out a sharp, breathless, and hysterical laugh.

"You are going to take the word of the help over your own wife?" she spat.

Her hands shook violently as she pointed at Clara again.

"Fire her right now, Victor, or I am calling the police!"

Victor took a slow, deliberate step toward Evelyn.

The cold authority he usually reserved for corporate boardrooms radiated from him.

"You aren't calling anyone, Evelyn," Victor said softly.

Evelyn froze in her tracks.

"Pack a bag," he ordered.

"What?" Evelyn gasped, her eyes widening in genuine disbelief.

"Get out of my house," Victor's voice finally cracked with barely contained rage.

"Victor, you can't do this!" she shrieked, her mask completely falling away.

"I want you out of this house before I call my lawyers," Victor warned.

"If you are still here in ten minutes, I will call the police myself."

Evelyn stared at him, realizing her perfect plan was entirely ruined.

She spun around, her red heels clicking furiously as she stormed up the grand marble stairs.

Victor exhaled a shaky breath and rubbed his temples.

He slowly knelt on the cold marble floor.

He looked at his son, truly seeing the deep fear in the boy's eyes for the very first time.

"Leo," Victor whispered gently.

"Come here, buddy."

Leo hesitated, looking up at Clara for permission.

Clara gave the boy a soft, reassuring nod.

She gently unpried his hands from her apron and guided him toward his father.

Victor wrapped his arms around the small boy, holding him tighter than he had in months.

"I've got you," Victor choked out.

May you like

"I am so, so sorry."

Clara stepped back into the shadows, her heart still pounding heavily in her chest.
