Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Unveiled

The name hung in the air like a heavy, suffocating cloud.
Thomas was Victor's oldest friend and trusted confidant.
They had built Sterling Enterprises from the ground up together over a decade of relentless work.
Victor stared blankly at the unlit marble fireplace.
His mind raced backward through recent board meetings and complex financial reports.
Thomas had been pushing aggressively for a massive corporate restructuring.
He had also been unusually supportive of Victor's sudden, whirlwind marriage to Evelyn.
The scattered pieces of the puzzle began to snap together with terrifying clarity.
"Mr. Sterling?" Clara's gentle voice broke his dark trance.
She was standing near the arched doorway, looking genuinely concerned.
"Are you alright, sir?" she asked cautiously.
Victor rubbed his face with both hands, letting out a long, exhausted sigh.
"I have been remarkably blind, Clara," he admitted quietly.
"We all miss things when we choose to trust people," she replied softly.
Leo had finally finished his warm milk and was nodding off on the large velvet sofa.
Clara approached quietly and draped a thick woven blanket over the sleeping boy.
She smoothed his messy blonde hair with absolute tenderness.
Victor watched the quiet interaction, feeling a profound wave of paternal guilt.
"You have been a better parent to him than I have," Victor confessed.
Clara stood up straight and faced him directly.
"He just needs his father, Mr. Sterling," she said firmly.
"He does not need a perfect man, just a present one."
Victor nodded slowly, taking her honest, unvarnished words to heart.
"I will be," Victor promised.
"But first, I have to ensure the people trying to hurt him are completely stopped."
He pulled his smartphone from his suit pocket once again.
"I need you to stay in his room tonight, Clara."
"I will not leave his side," she assured him without a second of hesitation.
Victor dialed the direct line to his private investigator.
"I need a full trace on Thomas Vance," Victor commanded into the receiver.
"I want his phone records, his offshore bank statements, and his recent movements."
He paused, his dark eyes narrowing with icy resolve.
"And I need to know exactly where Evelyn went after she left my property."

The war for his family's survival had shifted from the grand foyer to the corporate boardroom.
And Victor Sterling was finally ready to fight.
