Chapter 8 - The Desperate Return

Victor sat at his massive mahogany desk.
He signed the final legal documents to permanently sever Thomas from the company.
The corporate crisis was finally contained.
But a deep, unsettling feeling twisted tightly in his stomach.
Evelyn was still entirely unaccounted for.
He checked his heavy gold wristwatch.
It was mid-afternoon, and he had made a promise to be home for dinner.
Victor grabbed his suit jacket and hurried out of the corner office.
Miles away, at the quiet edge of the Sterling estate, a sleek silver sports car idled in the shadows.
Evelyn gripped the leather steering wheel until her knuckles turned bright white.
She had just seen the breaking news alerts about Thomas’s sudden arrest.
Panic and absolute fury burned fiercely in her chest.
Her perfect, wealthy future had completely evaporated in a single morning.
She had nothing left to lose.
She accelerated rapidly toward the heavy wrought-iron gates of the mansion.
Inside the quiet house, Clara was reading a colorful storybook to Leo in the sunroom.
The main security alarm panel on the wall suddenly beeped twice.
A bright red light flashed rapidly across the digital screen.
"Proximity alert at the main gate," the automated voice announced coldly.
Clara stood up instantly, closing the book.
"Leo, I need you to go to your safe spot in the library right now," she said calmly.
The young boy’s eyes widened with immediate terror.
"Is it her?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling.
"I will never let anyone hurt you," Clara promised fiercely.
She watched him scurry safely down the long hallway before turning to the main security monitor.
The high-definition camera feed showed Evelyn screaming violently at the intercom.
Evelyn was frantically typing old access codes into the illuminated keypad.
The heavy steel gates remained completely locked, denying every single attempt.
Clara picked up the secure landline and immediately dialed Victor's private cell number.
"Mr. Sterling, she is at the front gate," Clara reported the exact second he answered.
"Do not engage her and keep the perimeter locked down," Victor ordered sharply.
The loud sound of his SUV's revving engine echoed clearly through the phone speaker.
"I am less than five minutes away, and the police have already been dispatched."

Outside, Evelyn screamed in frustration and retrieved a heavy metal tire iron from her trunk.
She marched toward the thick glass lens of the security camera and raised her weapon.
