Chapter 12 - The Program That Vanished.

.The childcare fund had not been canceled.

It had been drained.

Damian’s accountants traced six months of payments from the employee childcare program into a vendor account controlled by Salvatore.

Anna sat at the conference table staring at the report.

“If that money had been there, Lily would have been at the center across the street.”

Damian nodded.

“She never would have been in the kitchen.”

“No.”

“She never would have been locked in the office.”

“No.”

“She never would have fallen.”

Damian did not soften the truth.

“No.”

Anna stood and walked to the window.

For hours she had blamed Miriam, Victor, Salvatore, and herself.

Now the chain was clear.

A stolen dollar had become a missing childcare place.

A missing childcare place had become a child sitting in a staff office.

A manager’s fear had become a threat.

A threat had become a fall.

The scratches on the floor had only exposed what was already broken.

Lily sat at the far end of the room drawing on a restaurant notepad.

She drew the kitchen.

She drew the step.

She drew Damian crouched beside her.

But she did not draw Miriam.

“She leaves out things that scare her.”

“I’m not scared now.”

Anna forced a smile.

“You don’t have to be brave for me.”

Lily returned to her drawing.

“I know.”

That answer broke something open in Anna.

She covered her mouth.

Damian looked away to give her privacy.

A moment later, Anna sat back down.

“I’m resigning.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I need to choose something for myself before another person chooses it for me.”

“Your back pay and stolen deductions will be paid whether you stay or leave.”

“And Lily’s medical appointments?”

“Covered.”

“By the company?”

“By me.”

“No.”

Anna’s voice strengthened.

“I don’t want charity because you feel guilty.”

“It isn’t charity.”

“Then what is it?”

“Responsibility.”

Anna studied him.

“Responsibility is fixing the system.”

She was right.

Damian called his legal team.

By noon, Moretti House announced an independent payroll audit, a protected employee complaint line, repayment of improper deductions, and an external review of the charity board.

No one’s name was used publicly while investigators worked.

No dramatic statements.

Lily listened as Anna read the staff notice.

“Does that mean nobody can lock the office anymore?”

“It means there won’t be a child locked in any office.”

“What if someone does it anyway?”

“They’ll answer for it.”

Then she pointed to her drawing.

“I fixed your floor.”

In the picture, Lily had colored a bright red rug over the scratched step.

“That works.”

Anna laughed softly.

It was the first normal sound the room had heard all day.

Then Damian’s attorney entered.

The smile vanished from his face before he spoke.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Salvatore’s lawyers filed an emergency claim.”

“For what?”

“Control of the charity.”

“He can’t.”

“They say he can.”

The attorney placed a twenty-year-old trust document on the table.

Under one obscure clause, if Damian was considered incapable of acting in the charity’s best interest, the chairman could assume temporary authority.

Anna read the highlighted line.

“How can they call him incapable?”

The attorney looked at Damian.

“They’re arguing that he froze accounts and stopped services based on an emotional reaction to an employee dispute.”

Damian almost laughed.

“They stole the services.”

“I know.”

“But until a judge sees the evidence, Salvatore may try to move the remaining funds.”

Damian’s eyes hardened.

“How long?”

“Hearing is tomorrow morning.”

Lily looked up from her drawing.

“Is the bad man taking the kids’ money?”

The room went quiet.

May you like

Damian looked at the trust document.

“Not if I get there first.”
