Chapter 14 - The Red Dress by the Window.

.Anna took the phone from Damian with shaking hands.

“What does the note say?”

The caregiver read it.

Mom, I went to fix the thing that started everything.

I’m sorry.

Anna closed her eyes.

“She went to the restaurant.”

Damian was already calling security.

The lobby cameras at Moretti House showed Lily entering ten minutes earlier.

She was still wearing the red dress beneath a small white cardigan.

Her gray walking boot made every step slow and awkward.

She had taken the city bus route she rode with her mother.

“She crossed downtown alone.”

Damian steadied her shoulder.

“We know where she is.”

Security found Lily inside the closed restaurant, standing beside the scratched section of wooden floor.

A box of red crayons sat open beside her.

She was trying to color the white marks.

When Anna rushed in, Lily froze.

“I’m sorry.”

Anna dropped to her knees and pulled her close.

“Never do that again.”

Lily began crying.

Just the exhausted tears of a child who had spent too many days thinking problems belonged to her.

“I wanted it to go away.”

Anna held her tighter.

“The scratch?”

“All of it.”

Damian stood a few feet away.

“If I didn’t scratch the floor, everyone wouldn’t be in trouble.”

“No.”

“You said it started with the scratch.”

“I said the investigation started there.”

He pointed gently to the floor.

“The bad choices started long before you came into this kitchen.”

Lily wiped her face.

“But everyone is mad.”

“Some adults are mad because the truth cost them something.”

“That is not the same as you causing it.”

She looked at the red crayon in her hand.

“What happens to the floor?”

Damian considered the scratches.

“I think we keep them.”

“What?”

“Not the whole damaged section.”

“Just those two marks.”

“So I remember to look down once in a while.”

Lily gave him a confused smile.

Then security approached.

There was new information.

Victor had signed a cooperation agreement without the condition Damian rejected.

He had provided bank passwords, vendor records, and emails linking Salvatore to the fraud.

Miriam had also agreed to a full statement.

Anna listened in silence.

“What happens now?”

Damian’s attorney answered.

“Investigators will handle the criminal side.”

“The company will handle repayment.”

“And the charity will be rebuilt under independent oversight.”

Lily tugged Anna’s sleeve.

“Can we go home?”

Anna kissed her forehead.

“Yes.”

Before they left, Lily turned back.

“Mr. Moretti?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still scary?”

Damian almost laughed.

“Probably.”

She thought about it.

“You’re not scary when you kneel down.”

Damian did not know why that sentence stayed with him.

But it did.

Three weeks later, the Moretti Family Kitchen Fund reopened under a new board.

The first restored program was employee childcare.

Anna received every dollar withheld from her pay.

She also received a written apology and an offer to return as head pastry chef.

She declined.

Instead, she accepted a position at a smaller bakery with daytime hours.

Damian understood.

Lily’s boot was scheduled to come off the following month.

Her cheek had already healed.

The scratch on the floor remained.

Then, one Friday afternoon, Damian received an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph of Lily’s drawing.

The restaurant.

The red rug.

The tattooed man kneeling beside a little girl.

On the back, Anna had written one sentence.

You asked what it cost.

It cost us fear.

And you gave that back.

Damian stared at the note for a long time.

Then his assistant entered.

“There’s someone here to see you.”

“Who?”

“A former employee.”

Damian stood.

“Name?”

The assistant checked the tablet.

“Luis Ortega.”

May you like

Damian looked again at Lily’s drawing.

“Send him in.”
