Chapter 4 - The Ledger Behind the Freezer.

.Damian did not run after Miriam.

He picked up his phone and quietly told security to lock the exterior employee doors.

Anna stared at him.

“You’re locking her in?”

“I’m making sure everyone stays where the cameras can see them.”

He turned to Lily.

“You and your mom stay here.”

Lily nodded.

Anna did not.

“If that ledger is what I think it is, she’ll destroy it.”

Miriam disappeared behind the freezer corridor door.

“You said you saw it.”

“Once.”

Anna pulled off her apron.

“She thought I was gone.”

“What did you see?”

“A black book with employee names, amounts, and dates.”

“Deductions?”

“Maybe.”

“I didn’t read enough.”

“You were scared.”

“I was protecting Lily.”

“Those can be the same thing.”

He told the guard to stay with Lily, then walked with Anna toward the freezer corridor.

The kitchen staff watched them pass without pretending to work now.

The atmosphere had changed.

Fear was turning into expectation.

At the old freezer office, the door stood open.

She had a cardboard box on the desk.

A paper shredder buzzed beside her.

Damian entered without raising his voice.

“Step away from it.”

“You cannot seriously think I’m stealing from you.”

“I haven’t said what I think.”

“Then let me save you the trouble.”

She pointed toward Anna.

“This woman has manipulated you because her daughter damaged your property.”

A strip of paper still hung from its teeth.

He pulled the power cord from the wall.

“That contains confidential personnel information.”

“Then it should have been in personnel files.”

He opened the cardboard box.

Inside were envelopes, handwritten notes, copies of payroll reports, and a black leather ledger.

“That’s it.”

Damian closed the lid.

“Don’t.”

For the first time, the manager’s polished authority slipped.

“You have no idea what you’re looking at.”

“Good.”

Damian handed the box to security.

“My accountant will.”

It sounded brittle.

“Your accountant signed half those adjustments.”

That was the first thing she had said that surprised him.

Miriam saw the opening and used it.

“You think I built this system alone?”

Damian’s gaze narrowed.

“What system?”

The confidence returned.

“Ask your finance director.”

Damian’s finance director, Victor Kane, had worked beside him for seven years.

He had access to every restaurant account.

He had approved every payroll change.

Miriam stepped closer.

“You built a company too large to watch.”

“You trusted numbers.”

“You trusted reports.”

“You trusted people who knew exactly what you wanted to see.”

Damian’s jaw tightened.

Behind him, Anna whispered, “She told Lily that.”

Miriam’s eyes moved to her.

“She said you only read numbers.”

Damian stared at Miriam.

“That wasn’t an insult.”

Miriam said nothing.

“It was a description of how your scheme worked.”

The security guard returned to the doorway.

“Mr. Moretti, you need to see this.”

He held up a phone.

The camera footage from the loading dock showed Victor Kane entering the building twenty minutes earlier.

Victor had not been scheduled to come in.

Miriam’s smile disappeared.

“Where is he now?”

The guard changed cameras.

Victor was walking through the rear corridor toward Damian’s office.

Lily was still inside.

Anna’s face changed.

“My daughter.”

She turned before anyone could stop her.

They reached the office corridor just as Victor’s hand touched the door.

Damian’s voice cut through the hallway.

“Victor.”

The finance director froze.

He turned slowly.

“What’s going on?”

Damian looked at the office door behind him.

Then at the small silver key in Victor’s hand.

It matched Miriam’s.

“What were you planning to open?”

May you like

Victor stared at the key.

And for the first time in seven years, Damian saw fear on the face of the man who handled every dollar he owned.
