Chapter 7 - A Debt That Never Existed.

.Damian took the photograph from Miriam and stared at it under the bright kitchen lights.

His father had been dead for eleven years.

The picture showed him outside the original Moretti restaurant, younger, thinner, smiling beside a man Damian recognized as Victor’s father.

Miriam watched him carefully.

“Victor said your father owed his family.”

Damian turned the photograph over.

The handwriting resembled his father’s.

That did not make the message true.

“How much?”

Miriam’s eyes flickered.

“He never gave me a number.”

“Then why help him?”

“Because he had the power to approve every payroll adjustment I made.”

“That does not answer the question.”

Miriam’s posture sagged for the first time.

“I was taking money too.”

Anna’s grip tightened around Lily’s shoulder.

“It began with small deductions.”

“Twenty dollars for a broken plate.”

“Fifty for a missed shift.”

“People complained, but most of them needed the job.”

“I told myself I was enforcing standards.”

“And then?”

“Victor showed me how to move the money.”

“To where?”

“To where?”

“A vendor account.”

The security chief wrote it down.

Miriam nodded toward the photograph.

“Victor said part of it was repayment.”

“And you believed him?”

“I believed I could benefit.”

The honesty was uglier than an excuse.

“What did you do to Lily?”

For the first time, her authority disappeared completely.

“She heard us arguing.”

“About what?”

“The letter.”

“She was trying to get water.”

“I told her to go back to the office.”

“You grabbed her.”

Lily whispered, “She pulled my arm.”

The kitchen became very still.

“I did not mean for her to fall.”

Lily touched her walking boot.

“I hit the cabinet.”

Anna’s eyes filled, but her voice remained steady.

“And her cheek?”

“She hit the edge when she went down.”

Damian’s hands curled at his sides.

He did not move toward Miriam.

That restraint frightened her more than anger would have.

“You hid what happened.”

“You told a six-year-old she would cost her mother a job if she spoke.”

Anna’s face went pale with fury.

Damian stepped between them before emotion could turn the room chaotic.

“This ends through evidence.”

“You’re terminated.”

She stared at him.

“You can’t throw everything on me.”

“I’m not.”

Damian handed the photograph to security.

“You are going to give a full statement.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then the ledger, the messages, the camera records, and payroll data will speak without you.”

A detective from the private security firm arrived at the kitchen entrance with two local officers.

Damian had called them before the network outage.

She looked around as though expecting someone to rescue her.

As officers began taking statements, Damian walked Anna and Lily away from the kitchen.

At the hallway bench, she sat and rubbed the top of her walking boot.

“You were very brave.”

She shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“Those can happen at the same time.”

Then she looked at the scratches on the floor behind them.

“Am I still in trouble?”

“No.”

“Even for the floor?”

“Especially not for the floor.”

Lily’s shoulders finally dropped.

But Anna was still staring at the photograph.

“Mr. Moretti.”

“If Victor really believes your father owed his family, he may not think he’s stealing.”

Damian’s face hardened.

“He knows exactly what he is doing.”

Anna turned the photograph over again.

“There’s something under the writing.”

Damian took it.

Beneath the words You owe the Kane family was a faint impression from another line, as if the photograph had once been pressed beneath a note.

Four nearly invisible numbers could be made out.

2-1-7-4.

Damian recognized them instantly.

May you like

It was not a debt amount.

It was the code to his father’s old safe.
