Chapter 2 - The Mother Who Wouldn’t Speak.

.Anna Harper crossed the kitchen so quickly that a bowl slipped from the counter behind her and shattered without making her turn around.

She knelt beside Lily and checked the walking boot, the red dress, and finally the bruise on her cheek.

“Are you hurt?”

Lily shook her head.

“I scratched the floor.”

Anna closed her eyes.

It was the reaction of someone hearing bad news she had expected for days.

“I’ll pay for it,” she said immediately.

Damian studied her.

“It’s wood.”

“I know.”

“It can be repaired.”

“I said I’ll pay for it.”

Her voice carried panic instead of irritation.

Miriam stepped forward with controlled patience.

“Anna, no one is asking you to make a scene.”

Damian glanced at her.

“She isn’t.”

Anna pulled Lily closer and lowered her voice.

“We should go back to the office.”

Lily clung to her sleeve.

“It was locked.”

“So did I.”

Miriam gave a small, dismissive sigh.

“The door sticks.”

“No, it was locked.”

Damian noticed that too.

He had spent enough years in rooms where people lied to recognize the moment before someone surrendered to fear.

“Anna,” he said, “who locked the office?”

Then she forced a smile.

“It probably just jammed.”

Damian did not challenge her.

Instead, he lifted his phone and called security.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking the camera outside the staff office.”

“There’s no reason to waste time on that.”

“That depends on what the camera shows.”

Miriam’s eyes flicked to Anna.

Again, it was only a fraction of a second.

Again, Damian saw it.

Lily tugged his sleeve.

“Mr. Moretti?”

“I’m sorry about your floor.”

Damian crouched again.

“Do you know what that floor cost?”

Lily’s eyes filled with worry.

She shook her head.

“Neither do I.”

A confused little smile almost appeared.

Damian pointed to the scratches.

“But I know what you cost.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“People are not invoices.”

Anna’s expression cracked for the first time.

Miriam stepped closer.

“With respect, Damian, you do not know the full situation.”

“Then tell me.”

Miriam lowered her voice.

“Anna has had attendance problems since the child was injured.”

“That is false,” Anna said before she could stop herself.

The kitchen became silent again.

Miriam stared at her.

Anna seemed to realize what she had done and immediately stepped back.

Damian turned to her.

“What is false?”

Anna pressed her lips together.

“Her schedule has been unstable.”

Anna whispered, “Because you kept changing it.”

Miriam’s face cooled.

“Careful.”

The word was quiet.

Lily moved behind her mother.

Damian’s eyes hardened.

“Don’t tell her to be careful.”

“I’m trying to protect the business.”

“No.”

He pointed toward the child.

“You were protecting something before I walked into this kitchen.”

Miriam said nothing.

A security guard appeared at the doorway carrying a tablet.

“Mr. Moretti, I checked the hall camera.”

Damian held out his hand.

Miriam took one step backward.

The guard hesitated.

“There’s an issue.”

“What issue?”

“The camera feed from the staff corridor was disabled yesterday at 3:17 p.m.”

She did not blink.

“By whom?”

The guard swallowed.

“The access code belongs to management.”

Miriam folded her arms.

“Several people have that code.”

She was staring at the floor.

Lily was staring at Miriam.

Then the little girl whispered something so quietly Damian almost missed it.

“She told Mom the cameras were gone.”

Anna squeezed Lily’s hand.

“Lily.”

But Lily kept looking at Damian.

“She said nobody would believe us now.”

The guard shifted uncomfortably.

Miriam’s face went pale.

Damian’s voice became very still.

“Believe you about what?”

May you like

Anna closed her eyes.

And for the first time, she looked like someone who understood that silence might finally be more dangerous than speaking.
