Chapter 16: The Photograph Inside

The bride’s fingers trembled so violently that the tiny gold locket clicked against itself before she could fully open it. The room held its breath.

Inside was not just a faded photograph.

It was recent.

Too recent.

A woman stood in the picture, smiling softly, her hand resting on the shoulder of the very same little girl who was now crying in the middle of the ballroom. The woman’s face was unmistakable.

It was her mother.

Alive.

The bride staggered back as if the image itself had struck her. “No… no, this isn’t possible,” she whispered, her voice cracking.

The groom stepped closer, his expression no longer calm but sharp, searching. “Where did this come from?” he asked, his voice low but firm.

The little girl sniffled, wiping her tears with trembling hands. “She… she visits me,” she said. “She lives near the lake house. She told me to wear it today… said it was important.”

Gasps rippled through the guests like a wave.

The bride’s eyes widened in horror. “That’s a lie!” she shouted, her voice rising into panic. “My mother died five years ago. I buried her myself!”

The groom didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he took the locket gently from her shaking hands and studied the photograph again.

It wasn’t just recent—it had been taken in a place he recognized.

The lake house.

A property the bride had inherited… and insisted on keeping locked, untouched, and off-limits.

“Why,” he asked slowly, turning to his bride, “have you never let anyone go there?”

Her silence was louder than any answer.

The little girl looked up again, her voice small but certain. “She said today everything would be revealed.”

A chill spread through the room.

The groom made a decision.

“We’re going there,” he said.

“Now.”
